Zara is an esteemed Spanish clothing and accessories brand headquartered in Arteixo, Galicia, that was established by founders Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera. Unlike its competitors, Zara has chosen to resist the prevalent trend of outsourcing fast fashion production to low-cost labor markets. The brand takes pride in maintaining its production in-house, ensuring quality control and overseeing ethical practices throughout its supply chain. Zara’s affiliation with the Inditex group, established in 1985 as the principal holding company for Zara’s ventures, further underscores its commitment to delivering “instant fashion” experiences. Inditex itself stands as one of the world’s largest distribution companies, playing a crucial role in facilitating Zara’s avant-garde concept of fashion retail and providing support to other retailers within the Inditex family.
One of Zara’s distinct strategies is its deliberate omission of advertising campaigns. Instead of investing in traditional promotional activities, the brand allocates its funds toward the opening of new stores, fostering the continued expansion of its global presence. Zara embarked on its international journey in 1980 with the inauguration of a store in Porto, Portugal. Subsequently, throughout the 1990s, Zara underwent a series of international expansions, venturing into the United States in 1989 and France in 1990. Presently, Zara has established retail operations in an impressive 78 countries worldwide. While the majority of Zara stores are company-owned, in compliance with local regulations, the brand franchises its stores in select markets.
As part of its continual evolution, Zara diversified its product offering, branching out into the realm of home goods in 2003 and collaborating with esteemed Spanish perfume house Puig to launch its fragrance line in 1998. The Zara fragrance collection comprises an impressive array of 801 scents, developed in collaboration with renowned perfumers including Mylène Alran, Jordi Fernández, Isaac Sinclair, Ane Ayo, Hamid Merati-Kashani, Fabrice Pellegrin, Nathalie Lorson, Benoist Lapouza, Marine Ipert, Alberto Morillas, Puig, Jo Malone, Frank Voelkl, Coralie Spicher, Carlos Benaim, Rosendo Mateu, Jérôme Epinette, Harry Fremont, Daphné Bugey, Marc Zini, Alex Lee, and Sonia Constant.
