Established in 1912, Fourrures Weil is a family-owned company specializing in fur products. Originally focused on crafting furs for the affluent clientele, the Weil brothers – Jacques, Marcel, and Alfred – decided to venture into the world of perfumes in 1927. The initial concept was to create scents for fur coats to counteract their inherent odors. However, this idea quickly evolved, leading to the production of distinct perfumes. These perfumes, available between 1927 and 1954, were elegantly presented in bottles from renowned glassmaker Baccarat.
During the 1940s, amidst the war, Fourrures Weil relocated its operations to the United States, shutting down its Paris offices. Unfortunately, the Paris factory fell into the hands of the Nazi regime, which purportedly produced some fragrances but ultimately never released them. After the war, the factory returned to the ownership of the Weil family.
Over the years, Parfums Weil underwent a series of ownership changes. Since the 1960s, it has been owned by various entities, including a prominent Algerian family, Fashion Fragrances, Classic Fragrances Ltd, Cosmetiques et Parfums de France, and its current owner, InterParfums (Aroli).
Collaborating with perfumer Claude Frayesse, the Weil family initially created fragrances specifically designed for fur coats. These scents, named after fur types like Hermine, Chinchilla, and Zibeline, were tailored to complement each fur’s unique characteristics. Notably, Zibeline, a robust fragrance featuring intense civet, incorporated jasmine, sandalwood, aldehydes, honey, iris, tarragon, and coriander to complete its composition.
However, Parfums Weil expanded its offerings beyond fur-related scents, introducing a range of fragrances suitable for direct application on the skin. Notable examples include Secret de Venus, a classic and feminine chypre floral perfume launched in 1933, featuring lavender, grapefruit, bergamot, cassia, peach, lemon, freesia, gardenia, jasmine, vanilla, cedar, patchouli, and sandalwood as prominent notes. Additionally, Antilope, a floral aldehydic perfume released in 1946, encompassed neroli, bergamot, aldehydes, clary sage, rose, lily of the valley, jasmine, carnation, iris, violet, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, tonka, amber, oakmoss, and musk.
In 1971, Weil de Weil, a green floral perfume for women, made its debut, showcasing a captivating blend of tangerine, neroli, green notes, galbanum, hyacinth, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, ylang-ylang, mimosa, rose, daffodil, sandalwood, vetiver, civets, musk, and oakmoss.
Under its current ownership by InterParfums, Weil has continued to release new fragrances, including Weil Pour Homme, Sweet Bambou 2005, Eau de Weil, and So Weil. With a rich heritage, Weil boasts 35 perfumes in its fragrance collection, with collaborations featuring renowned perfumers such as Jean-Pierre Weil, Claude Fraysse, and Jean-Pierre Mary.
