Vivienne Westwood is a highly acclaimed fashion designer hailing from the United Kingdom. She is renowned for her significant involvement in crafting the original punk rock aesthetic during the 1970s. With a vast background in art, fashion, and jewelry, Westwood kick-started her career as a primary school teacher while simultaneously making money through her unique jewelry designs.
It was her fortuitous encounter with musician and entrepreneur Malcolm McClaren, who later managed iconic punk and New Wave artists such as the Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, and Bow Wow Wow, that propelled Westwood’s career forward. Together, they opened a boutique located at 430 Kings Road. Drawing inspiration from underground biker and fetish cultures, the shop offered unconventional clothing crafted from leather and rubber. These avant-garde pieces featured embellishments such as spikes, chains, safety pins, and even razor blades. Over time, the store’s name underwent several transformations, evolving from Let It Rock to Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die, and ultimately settling on Seditionaries. As the boutique gained popularity, it became synonymous with the emerging youth culture that would eventually be identified as Punk.
As the 1970s drew to a close and punk culture infiltrated mainstream society, the shop at 430 Kings Road underwent yet another transformation, rebranding as Worlds End and renovating its clothing selection. Throughout the 1980s, Westwood’s designs encompassed a diverse range of artistic inspirations. Early on, her collection capitalized on the New Romantic movement in fashion and music, incorporating a pirate theme into her garments. Subsequent collections in this era, which Westwood has aptly named the “Early Years,” drew inspiration from historical events, pop culture, cities, and even third world cultures. In 1983, Westwood severed her association with Malcolm McClaren, taking the opportunity to reinvent herself and her fashion designs during the late 1980s and early 1990s. She refers to this specific period as the “Pagan Years.” Harris Tweed, a traditional British fabric, took center stage in her creations, which bore historical influences and paid homage to fashion trends of the past.
The remaining years of the 1990s, referred to by Westwood as the “Anglomania” period, witnessed her exploration of a traditional feminine silhouette, accentuated by padding and bustles. Historical inspirations persisted, culminating in a Tudor-inspired line in 1997-1998. From 2000 onwards, Westwood embarked on what she describes as a period of “Exploration,” wherein she places greater emphasis on the interplay between various fabrics and the cutting and tailoring techniques employed in her designs.
In addition to her innovative fashion creations, Vivienne Westwood collaborates with Coty to offer an exquisite line of fragrances bearing her name. The inaugural perfume, Boudoir, made its debut in 1998. The scent collection includes fragrances inspired by her boutique’s name, such as Let It Rock, as well as evoking specific fashion eras in her remarkable history, like Anglomania. The most recent additions to Westwood’s fragrance line are part of the “Alice” collection, featuring Naughty Alice and Cheeky Alice. Currently, Vivienne Westwood boasts an impressive repertoire of 11 perfumes within our fragrance base, with the earliest fragrance released in 1998 and the newest in 2014. Perfumers Dominique Ropion, Martin Gras, Marie Salamagne, and Bruno Jovanovic have collaborated with Westwood to create these captivating aromas.
