Versace is a renowned Italian fashion design house that was initially established by the late Gianni Versace and subsequently carried forward by other members of the Versace family. The brand made a remarkable entry into the industry in 1978 with its women’s wear collection, instantly gaining widespread acclaim and success. In the same year, the company unveiled its men’s line and opened its inaugural boutique in Milan. Notably, Gianni Versace selected the Medusa symbol as the emblematic logo for his company.
Versace’s opulent clothing and accessories are notable for their fusion of influences, which range from pop art to classical Greek and Roman architecture. The fashion house uniquely embraces celebrity endorsements, utilizing famous personalities in its advertising campaigns. Early on, notable celebrities such as Elton John became avid supporters of Versace. Prominent figures including Madonna, Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, and Halle Berry have also served as the face of the brand throughout its history. Versace is often credited with contributing to the rise of the “supermodel” phenomenon in the 1990s, as the brand casted leading fashion models for its highly anticipated 1991/1992 Autumn and Winter runway show.
Over time, Versace extended its product offerings to encompass various lines including accessories, home furnishings, and cosmetics. Today, the brand comprises several distinct lines, namely Atelier Versace, Versace Couture, Versace Jeans Couture, Versace Home Collection, Versace Collection, and Versus (Versace). In addition to fashion and accessories, Versace’s wide-ranging influence also encompasses a luxury hotel known as the Palazzo Versace. Notably, Versace Couture stands as the flagship line, which includes the fragrance division.
In 1981, Versace made its foray into the world of fragrances with the release of its first scent, Gianni Versace for Women. Since then, the brand has launched fragrances for both men and women under labels including Versace, Versus, Jeans, and Jeans Couture. These fragrances are produced in collaboration with Euroitalia SRL. Despite the tragic loss of Gianni Versace in 1997 due to an American spree murderer, the company persevered under the stewardship of his family. Sister Donatella, formerly the vice-president of the company and an integral muse to Gianni Versace, assumed the role of creative director. Meanwhile, older brother Santo Versace serves as the president and CEO, and niece Allegra Versace holds a 50% ownership stake in the company.
To date, Versace has an impressive portfolio of 76 perfumes in its fragrance base. The earliest fragrance was introduced in 1981, while the latest addition debuted in 2022.
