Tiffany & Co. is a prestigious American jewelry and silverware company that was founded in 1837 in New York City. The company was established by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young, originally under the name Tiffany, Young and Ellis, specializing in selling stationery items. However, in 1853, Charles Tiffany assumed control of the company and shifted its focus exclusively to the realm of jewelry, prompting a name change to Tiffany & Co.
In a testament to their commitment to quality and innovation, Tiffany published its first catalog, known as the “Blue Book,” in 1845, a tradition that continues to this day. Notably, in 1867, Tiffany & Co. became the first American firm to receive an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Additionally, the company’s notable accomplishments include creating the iconic insignia that would later become the New York Yankees’ “NY” logo in 1877. This logo was originally engraved on a medal of honor awarded to the first New York City police officer shot in the line of duty, and it was subsequently adopted by the Yankees in 1909.
Through the years, Tiffany & Co. has made significant contributions to American culture and history. For instance, the company was involved in revising the Great Seal of the United States in 1885 and designing the Medal of Honor on behalf of the United States Department of the Navy in 1919. The “Tiffany Cross” version of the Medal of Honor holds particular rarity, as it was exclusively awarded for combat-related acts.
Tiffany’s reputation for excellence expanded beyond jewelry and silverware when, in 1968, US First Lady Lady Bird Johnson commissioned the company to design a White House china service adorned with 90 flowers. Furthermore, Tiffany & Co. collaborated with Japanese mobile phone operator SoftBank in 2008 to create a limited edition 10-model cell phone, featuring over 400 diamonds.
Presently, Tiffany & Co. boasts an esteemed roster of renowned designers who craft collections for the brand, including Frank Gehry, Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger, Richard Lambertson, and John Truex. The company’s flagship store, a Manhattan landmark since 1940, sits at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street and captivates passersby with its iconic and captivating window displays famous worldwide. In terms of manufacturing, approximately 60% of Tiffany merchandise is produced in the company’s own facilities. Jewelry and silver goods are crafted in Mount Vernon, New York, Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Lexington, Kentucky, while silver hollowware is produced in New Jersey. Tiffany also oversees subsidiaries involved in diamond processing, cutting, and polishing in facilities located outside of the United States.
Tiffany’s exquisite designs have garnered a dedicated following that includes prominent families, athletes, Hollywood stars, and European royalty. Over the years, the company has expanded into the fragrance business, launching their first fragrance, Tiffany for Women, in 1987. This floral perfume, developed by renowned perfumer Francois Demachy, was soon followed by Tiffany for Men, introduced in 1989 and created by perfumer Jacques Polge. The elegant fragrance bottles were designed by Pierre Dinand. Subsequently, Tiffany released several other captivating fragrances for both men and women. To date, Tiffany has a collection of 17 perfumes in their fragrance line, all crafted by esteemed perfumers such as Daniela (Roche) Andrier, Jérôme Epinette, Honorine Blanc, Marie Salamagne, Sophie Labbe, and Nicolas Beaulieu, alongside Demachy and Polge.
