The Slava Zaitsev fashion house was established by Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Zaitsev, also known as Slava Zaitsev, in Russia. Zaitsev is a notable Russian fashion designer, painter, graphic artist, and theatrical costume designer.
Zaitsev draws inspiration from traditional Russian and Slavic styles, which heavily influence his designs. His passion for the arts led him to enroll in the Faculty of Applied Arts at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Ivanovo in 1952, where he obtained a diploma as a textile artist. In 1956, he relocated to Moscow and pursued further studies at the Moscow Textile Institute, earning a diploma in painting and design.
During the Soviet regime, Zaitsev became a prominent figure in haute couture and drew comparisons to esteemed Western designers. His career took off when he assumed the role of artistic director at the Experimental Technical Garment Factory in Moscow, overseeing the production of women’s clothing for retail stores. Zaitsev gained recognition for his elegant interpretations of traditional Russian attire. However, despite his success, the regime did not approve the production of his collection.
Subsequently, Zaitsev became the Chief Designer at the All-Union Fashion House, known as Dom Modeli, where his work caught the attention of French designers. He earned the nickname “Red Dior” due to his talent and style. In 1978, Zaitsev established his own studio, which later evolved into the renowned “Slava Zaitsev” Moscow Fashion House or Dom Modi. As one of the largest Soviet couturiers, Zaitsev catered to thousands of customers, including high society ladies such as the Soviet First Lady. During this period, he also authored two fashion books, “Such Changeable Fashion” and “This Multifaceted World of Fashion.”
In 1987, Zaitsev signed a three-year contract with Intertorg Inc., enabling him to offer and sell his designs in the United States after showcasing his designer pieces in Japan and Canada. He soon conquered Paris, joining the Maison de Couture and earning the title of “Man of the Year in the World of Fashion.”
Zaitsev’s creativity extended beyond fashion, as he ventured into the fragrance industry in 1991. In collaboration with the French house of L’OrĂ©al, he produced his first perfume, a timeless women’s fragrance called Maroussia. This floral oriental scent has garnered popularity not only among Russian women but also among a global audience.
In 1992, Zaitsev expanded his influence to the United States, captivating audiences with his fashion shows and exhibitions of his paintings. These events marked the beginning of cultural exchanges. Even the President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, recognized Zaitsev’s contributions and awarded him the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and the arts in 1996. Zaitsev also enjoyed a close relationship with President Putin, designing an attire for his wife during their visit to the Queen of England. Additionally, Zaitsev expanded his collection to include menswear.
Throughout his career, Slava Zaitsev has remained steadfast in his dedication to Russian style and primarily designs for a Russian audience. To date, the designer has created 10 unique fragrances in collaboration with perfumer Robertet, with the earliest edition dating back to 1992 and the most recent launched in 2021.
