Serge Lutens is a versatile and multi-talented artist, excelling in various creative fields such as fashion design, perfume design, hair styling, photography, and film-making. Born in France in 1942, Lutens honed his skills as a hairstylist in Lille, where his interest in cosmetics and photography began to flourish. In the 1960s, he relocated to Paris and worked as a makeup artist for esteemed publication Vogue magazine. Collaborating with renowned photographers and working with top models of the time, Lutens quickly made a name for himself.
In 1967, Lutens was commissioned by the esteemed designer Christian Dior to develop a line of cosmetics, further solidifying his reputation as a talented creator. The 1970s saw Lutens expand his horizons as a professional photographer, and he even ventured into film-making, showcasing his artistry at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
In 1980, Lutens struck an influential partnership with the esteemed Japanese cosmetics company, Shiseido. The collaboration proved successful, with Lutens designing packaging and cosmetics, while also capturing attention through his award-winning advertising photography for the brand. This teamwork also marked Lutens’ entry into the fragrance industry, with Shiseido commissioning him to create their unique scent, Nombre Noir, in 1982. The partnership continued to flourish, resulting in the creation of the legendary fragrance Feminite du Bois in 1992.
Further enhancing his status as an entrepreneur, Lutens conceptualized and designed the luxurious perfume house, Les Salons du Palais Royal, exclusively for the marketing of Shiseido and Lutens scents. However, in 2000, Lutens embarked on his independent venture, Parfums-Beaute Serge Lutens, where he collaborates closely with perfumer Christopher Sheldrake to create his distinct perfumes.
The timing of Lutens’ solo endeavor proved fortuitous, as it coincided with the rise of e-commerce and social networking on the internet, allowing exclusive and unconventional fragrances, like those of Serge Lutens, to gain popularity and be available for discussion among fragrance enthusiasts. The unique and niche quality of Serge Lutens fragrances has placed them firmly in the category of cult favorites.
Currently, the esteemed designer has an impressive lineup of 103 perfumes in his fragrance base, with the earliest edition dating back to 1991 and the latest from 2023. Collaborating with perfumers such as Christopher Sheldrake, Maurice Roucel, Serge Lutens himself, and Gilles Romey, Serge Lutens fragrances continue to captivate and enthrall fragrance enthusiasts worldwide.
