Elsa Schiaparelli, born in 1890 and passed away in 1973, was a renowned Italian fashion designer known for her daring and avant-garde designs that pushed the boundaries of the fashion industry. Inspired by the surrealism movement and artists like Salvador Dali and Alberto Giacometti, Schiaparelli made a name for herself by presenting unconventional and thought-provoking creations.
In the late 1920s, Schiaparelli relocated to Paris and established her first boutique. It was during this time that she unveiled her inaugural collection of knitwear, featuring bold and eye-catching patterns that played with optical illusions. This creative approach, known as “deceive the eye” motive, showcased her innovative perspective on fashion.
As her career progressed, Schiaparelli expanded her repertoire to include exquisite evening wear. To accommodate her growing business, she moved her boutique from Rue de la Paix to the iconic “Schiap Shop” in the prestigious Place Vendôme.
Schiaparelli’s distinctive style was characterized by the use of vibrant and audacious colors, such as iced blue and hot pink. She wasn’t afraid to experiment with unconventional elements, such as designing tall hats resembling shoes and incorporating padded shoulders into female suits.
Not only did Schiaparelli pioneer the separation of sports clothes as a distinct category, but she also introduced unique design elements like unusually shaped buttons, zippers, and man-made fabrics. Her distinctive approach revolutionized the fashion industry and left a lasting impact on future designers.
During World War II, Schiaparelli relocated to New York and opened a store in 1949. However, upon returning to Paris after the war, she found that the fashion landscape had changed dramatically, and her designs no longer aligned with the prevailing style, epitomized by Christian Dior’s “New Look.” As a result, she made the difficult decision to close her business in December 1954.
One of Schiaparelli’s most notable contributions to the fashion world was the launch of her iconic perfume “Shocking” in 1937. The perfume, housed in a bottle designed by Eleonore Fini, echoed the curves of Mae West’s figure and was draped in a striking shade of pink. Originally manufactured in Czechoslovakia, the fragrance was reintroduced in 1998.
Schiaparelli fragrances have become synonymous with the Pikenz company, with a total of 18 perfumes in their collection. The perfume house dates back to 1928, with the latest edition released in 1992. Collaborations with esteemed perfumers Jean Carles and Nathalie Feisthauer have resulted in unique and captivating scents that have stood the test of time.
