Salvatore Ferragamo, an esteemed Italian shoe designer, was renowned for his innovative and scientific approach to footwear design. His journey in the world of shoemaking began at a tender age, as he crafted his first pair of shoes at just nine years old. After a brief period of studying shoemaking in Naples, Ferragamo made his way to the United States in 1914. There, he briefly worked in a boot factory in Boston before turning his attention to the flourishing film industry.
Initially, Ferragamo’s establishment primarily offered shoe repair services and tailor-made footwear. However, he quickly ventured into designing shoes for the film industry, earning him the esteemed moniker, “shoemaker to the stars.” Motivated by the perplexity of reconciling eye-catching shoe designs with discomfort, Ferragamo pursued anatomy studies at the University of Southern California. Equipped with this newfound knowledge, he returned to Italy in 1927 and set up his shop in Florence. His clientele became a distinguished roster, consisting of celebrities and influential political figures of the time.
Ferragamo’s exceptional creations included various groundbreaking designs, such as the cork wedge heel and the cage heel. By the 1950s, his stores had proliferated not only in Italy but also in the United States, while his workforce consisted of 700 skilled artisans. Although Ferragamo passed away in 1960, his eponymous company has remained under family ownership and has gracefully expanded its empire to encompass an array of products like bags, eyewear, accessories, watches, ready-to-wear clothing, and perfumes.
The introduction of Salvatore Ferragamo’s first fragrance, Salvatore Ferragamo for women, dates back to 1998. This milestone paved the way for the establishment of Ferragamo Parfums in 2001, an entity responsible for releasing fragrances under the prestigious Ferragamo and Incanto brand names. To date, the fragrance base of designer Salvatore Ferragamo comprises an impressive collection of 112 perfumes. The earliest fragrance was crafted in 1960, while the most recent addition hails from 2023.
