S.T. Dupont, a distinguished French luxury goods company, was established in 1872 by Simon Tissot-Dupont, the founder after whom the company was named. Originally specializing in fine leather wallets and briefcases, the company quickly seized the opportunity presented by the “Golden Age of Travel” towards the end of the 19th century. This era saw a surge in demand for opulent suitcases, trunks, and travel accessories that not only exuded style but could also withstand long journeys lasting weeks or even months.
S.T. Dupont rose to the occasion by providing some of the most exquisite luggage and travel cases of the time. The founder’s sons, André and Lucien, played a crucial role in refining this aesthetic. They designed unique travel cases that reportedly cost a fortune – so much so that one S.T. Dupont employee likened their price to that of a house. To cater to their affluent clientele, the brothers even opened a hotel. In 1923, the company expanded further by establishing a second S.T. Dupont workshop in Faverges, France, the family’s hometown. Even today, S.T. Dupont products are meticulously handcrafted in this very location.
The company’s luxurious travel gear made its way to the United States in 1929, being made available in Cartier’s boutiques. Despite the challenges posed by World War II, S.T. Dupont continued to innovate. The company invented the very first pocket gas lighter, which underwent further improvements and received a patent in 1952. This model, known as the Ligne 1, has retained its popularity and remains a symbol of prestige worldwide.
The brand’s reputation soared when it started designing exclusive luggage for influential figures such as Queen Elizabeth of England and the legendary Audrey Hepburn. In 1973, S.T. Dupont embarked on a new venture by introducing its first luxury pen, the Classique, crafted from silver. This was accompanied by a renaissance of the brand’s classic luxury goods, such as watches, leather goods, and cufflinks, which continue to be produced to this day. In 2007, the company celebrated its 135th anniversary, marking a momentous milestone.
Today, S.T. Dupont is renowned for its expertise in creating luxury goods crafted from precious metals, fine leather, and adorned with intricate Chinese lacquer detailing. Fragrances have also become a significant addition to the brand’s opulent line of products. The debut fragrances, S.T. Dupont pour Homme and S.T. Dupont pour Femme, were introduced in 1998. Collaborating with Inter Parfums Inc., S.T. Dupont has released a total of 53 captivating perfumes. The earliest fragrance was crafted in 1998, with the most recent being unveiled in 2020. Perfumers such as Christophe Raynaud, Bertrand Duchaufour, and Francoise Caron have lent their expertise to create these exceptional fragrances, along with several others.
