Royal Copenhagen, also known as the Royal Porcelain Factory, is a prestigious Danish porcelain manufacturer with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1775. Originally headquartered in Copenhagen, the company was founded by Frantz Heinrich Müller, a pharmacist who conducted experiments with hard feldspar porcelain derived from quartz.
In 1775, Queen Dowager Juliane Marie and her son Frederik joined forces with Müller to establish the company, which was then operated by the Danish Royal Family for nearly a century. Although ownership transitioned to private individuals in 1868, the company retained its name and the esteemed royal legacy that accompanied it. Later, in 1882-1884, Royal Copenhagen merged with the Aluminia faience factory and relocated from Copenhagen to Frederiksberg.
Under the visionary leadership of Arnold Krog, a painter and architect appointed as manager, Royal Copenhagen experienced a revival. Krog focused on reinvigorating the production of the company’s iconic porcelain line, Blue Fluted. Additionally, he introduced a groundbreaking technique for underglaze decoration, enabling the depiction of detailed landscapes and other naturalistic graphics. The introduction of this underglaze decorated porcelain gained international recognition when it was showcased at the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris, where it earned the prestigious Grand Prix award.
Presently, Royal Copenhagen continues to be renowned for its exquisite porcelain, meticulously hand-painted and produced using traditional, time-honored methods. The brand has achieved global recognition for its Danish heritage, unwavering commitment to tradition, and willingness to embrace innovation. Operating in the United States, European Union, and Asia, Royal Copenhagen employs over 500 individuals. The company is part of the esteemed group of Scandinavian companies, Royal Scandinavia, and is currently owned by Axcel, a private equity fund.
In addition to its exceptional porcelain creations, Royal Copenhagen has ventured into the world of fragrance. The company’s fragrance portfolio boasts eight distinct perfumes. The inaugural scent was introduced in 1970, and the most recent addition to the collection debuted in 2014.
