Revlon, established in 1932 during the challenging era of the Great Depression, is a renowned American cosmetics company. The Revlon journey began with the Revson brothers, Charles and Joseph, joining forces with chemist Charles Lachman, symbolized by the “L” in the Revlon name. Their initial breakthrough came in the form of a pigmented nail polish, offering superior coverage compared to traditional dyes. This innovative product gained popularity among department stores and drugstores, propelling the company’s rapid growth as a supplier of quality manicure tools.
Revlon expanded its offerings in 1940 with the introduction of lipstick, marking its entry into the cosmetics market. In 1955, the company went public, paving the way for further expansion and diversification. By the 1960s, Revlon had diversified its product lineup, catering to various market segments under brand names like Revlon, Princess Marcella Borghese, Ultima II, Natural Wonder, Moon Drops, and Etherea. With international marketing endeavors dating back to the late 1950s, Revlon successfully showcased the “American look” to global audiences, employing top models—a strategy that continues to shape the brand’s identity to this day.
Fragrances have held a significant place within Revlon’s offerings since its inception, with the introduction of Jean Naté in 1935. A groundbreaking milestone came in 1968 when Revlon collaborated with designer Norman Norell to pioneer the first American designer fragrance, Norell. Revlon further challenged conventions with the launch of the iconic perfume Charlie in 1973, featuring a woman confidently wearing slacks—an advertisement that resonated with the emerging independent women of the 1970s and quickly became a best-seller. During the 1970s, Revlon successfully introduced a series of highly regarded women’s fragrances, including Enjoli, Jontue, and Ciara. Even in the 21st century, Revlon retains its prominent position as one of the world’s leading mass-market cosmetics and fragrance manufacturers.
