Pierre Cardin, a renowned Italian-born French fashion designer, gained international acclaim for his revolutionary fashion designs during the 1950s and 1960s. Originally trained as an architect, Cardin moved to Paris in 1945 and honed his skills working for prestigious fashion houses such as Jeanne Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli, before joining Christian Dior’s emerging brand. In 1950, Cardin decided to embark on his own fashion venture, establishing his eponymous fashion house.
Cardin’s illustrious career took off with his innovative costume designs for revered filmmaker Jean Cocteau and numerous theatrical productions. In 1953, he unveiled his inaugural women’s wear collection, which featured his iconic “bubble dress” design. Its immense popularity facilitated the opening of his first women’s boutique in 1954. Building on this success, Cardin further expanded his brand by introducing a men’s boutique in 1957. He began designing men’s shirts and ties, with aspirations of creating a comprehensive men’s collection.
At that time, ready-to-wear apparel was gaining traction in the fashion industry, prompting Cardin to develop his first women’s ready-to-wear collection in 1959, exclusively for the esteemed department store, Printemps. The following year, in 1960, Cardin debuted his inaugural men’s collection, which swiftly led to the introduction of a men’s ready-to-wear line in 1961. Acknowledging the emerging market in Japan, Cardin embarked on extensive travels and was among the first European designers to embrace the Japanese fashion industry. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed an honorary professor at Japan’s Bunka Fukosa design college in 1962, and the prestigious Pierre Cardin Prize for design has been awarded there ever since. His ventures extended beyond Japan to encompass China and other Asian countries, establishing his brand as a prominent force in the region.
Throughout his career, Cardin garnered numerous accolades for his boundary-pushing designs, including esteemed awards such as the Golden Thimble and the Golden Spinning Wheel. In 1971, he opened “Espace Cardin,” a multifaceted design showroom that seamlessly melds elements of a theater, restaurant, and cinema. Exhibiting his versatility and creative prowess, Cardin ventured into furniture, interior design, automobile interior design, and jewelry. A string of Pierre Cardin showrooms and boutiques were launched during the 1970s and 1980s, solidifying his global presence.
In a notable move in 1981, Cardin acquired the iconic Maxim’s restaurant in Paris. Respecting its rich Art Nouveau heritage, he preserved its remarkable style while adding a cabaret on the second floor. Over time, Cardin transformed the remaining floors into a museum dedicated to the Art Nouveau movement. Under Cardin’s ownership, the Maxim’s brand expanded to encompass restaurants worldwide, a line of gourmet foods, perfumes, and even a fleet of boats.
Expanding his brand beyond fashion, Cardin began offering perfumes under his own label, starting with the men’s fragrance Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur in 1972. Over the years, Cardin collaborated with esteemed perfumers such as Raymond Chaillan, Martin Gras, Francoise Caron, and many more, resulting in an impressive portfolio of 48 distinct fragrances. Pierre Cardin fragrances have left an indelible mark on the industry, with the earliest edition dating back to 1955 and the most recent release in 2019.
