Hailing from Virginia, Ellis initially ventured into the fashion realm through the retail sector. Equipped with a master’s degree in retailing from New York University, he returned to Virginia to assume the roles of a buyer and merchandiser, ultimately co-founding his own retail establishment. His journey brought him back to New York, where he joined a sportswear company, eventually embarking on a remarkable opportunity to design a captivating womenswear collection. Despite his inability to sketch, Ellis’s profound understanding of clothing and the fashion landscape propelled him to create one of the most flourishing sportswear lines of the 1970s. This triumph laid the groundwork for the introduction of his eponymous brand in 1978, a monumental milestone for Perry Ellis.
Over time, Perry Ellis expanded his line beyond sportswear, encompassing menswear, accessories, shoes, and captivating fragrances. In 1985, the brand unveiled its inaugural perfumes, Perry Ellis for Women and Perry Ellis for Men. Tragically, after Ellis’s untimely passing, a succession of esteemed designers, including Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Jacobs, and Tom Ford, took the helm at the company. While the womenswear collection was discontinued in 2003, the brand persists as a renowned and prosperous entity, acclaimed for its opulent menswear and captivating fragrances.
To this day, the fragrances bearing the Perry Ellis name continue to captivate the senses, with a staggering collection of 64 scents in their fragrance base.
