The Perfumer’s Workshop was established in 1971 by Donald and Gun Bauchner with the intention of establishing a personalized perfume boutique. Their breakthrough came in 1977 with the introduction of Tea Rose, a fragrance that quickly gained popularity and is now widely distributed around the world. The brand continues to manufacture its products in the United States.
The company made a significant impact when it secured a concession within Bloomingdale’s stores. While perfume oils were a hallmark of the hippie era, The Perfumer’s Workshop reimagined this concept to align with Bloomingdale’s upscale image. This marked the birth of the idea of custom-made fragrances, and Perfumer’s Workshop counters were subsequently opened at Selfridge’s (1973) and Harrods (1974) in London. In 1975, the brand’s first counter in Paris was established at Galeries Lafayette.
For the first time, customers had the opportunity to make their own choices regarding the products they desired. They were able to select ingredients, perfume notes and accords, as well as bottles and packaging.
By the end of the 1970s, The Perfumer’s Workshop had expanded its product portfolio to include a collection of ready-made fragrances that were sold at perfume counters throughout the United States. One of their most revered fragrances, Tea Rose, gained popularity and was worn by numerous famous women including Princess Diana, Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, and Nicole Kidman. Composed using a combination of bergamot, rose, lily, tuberose, sandalwood, and amber notes, Tea Rose has sold more than 50 million bottles by the end of 2011.
The Samba collection was introduced in 1987 and quickly found its place in Bloomingdale’s outlets. This line gained significant popularity, leading to the release of multiple fragrances within the collection.
In the 1990s, with the establishment of their Paris office, The Perfumer’s Workshop began creating fragrances for renowned brands such as Sonia Rykiel, L’Or de Torrente, Jean-Luc Amsler, and Louis Ferraud.
With their products available in more than 90 countries, The Perfumer’s Workshop has a wide global presence. Additionally, in response to changing consumer habits, the brand launched its first online-only collection, Zipped, in 2011. This collection is exclusively available for testing and purchase online, reflecting the growing preference for online shopping among customers. The Designer Perfumer’s Workshop offers a range of 59 perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1977 and the newest released in 2016. These fragrances were developed in collaboration with renowned perfumers including Ilias Ermenidis, Mark Buxton, Gil Clavien, Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann, Lucas Sieuzac, and Pierre Negrin.
