Penhaligon’s is a renowned English perfumery that dates back to its establishment in 1870 by William Penhaligon. Originally, the company started as a barbershop, but soon expanded its offerings with its very first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, in 1872. This exceptional scent was inspired by the neighboring Turkish Bath and its distinctive sulfurous steam.
One of Penhaligon’s most iconic fragrances, Blenheim Bouquet, was introduced in 1902 at the request of the Duke of Marlborough, who resided at Blenheim Palace. This remarkable creation broke away from the prevailing floral trends of the time, captivating wearers with its vibrant combination of zesty citrus, spices, and woody notes.
Although the original shop on Jermyn Street was unfortunately destroyed during The Blitz in 1941, Penhaligon’s fragrances continued to endure. In 1956, the company was honored with a Royal Warrant by the Duke of Edinburgh for the manufacturing of toiletries, reaffirming its commitment to excellence.
The opening of a new flagship store in Covent Gardens in 1975 marked a turning point for Penhaligon’s. Not only did it provide a fresh direction for the brand, but it also revived William Penhaligon’s original formulas and introduced new floral scents designed to appeal to the modern female customer. A notable fragrance from this period is Bluebell, introduced in 1978, which remains a beloved best-seller to this day.
Penhaligon’s received its second Royal Warrant in 1988, this time from the Princess of Wales, further accentuating its prestige and reputation. The brand has also modernized and reintroduced many of William Penhaligon’s original scents as part of the “Anthology Collection,” showcasing its dedication to preserving tradition while continuously evolving.
The iconic bottles housing Penhaligon’s fragrances maintain the elegant design conceived by William Penhaligon himself—clear glass vessels adorned with a delicate ribbon, exuding timeless sophistication.
In addition to its extensive perfume collection, Penhaligon’s now offers a range of bath and body care products, as well as luxury shaving and grooming accessories, perfectly complementing their fragrances.
With several stores located in London and across the United Kingdom, Penhaligon’s has expanded its reach to North America and Europe through select stockists. Its commitment to fine, traditional perfume ingredients and techniques remains unwavering, while its offerings continue to captivate fragrance enthusiasts worldwide.
