Paul Smith, a renowned British designer, has made a name for himself in the fashion industry primarily through his menswear collections. However, his journey in the world of fashion began in an unexpected way. Originally aspiring to become a professional athlete, Smith’s plans took a different turn after a severe accident forced him to reconsider his career path. Intrigued by art and ideas, he found himself drawn to the realm of fashion.
Smith’s initial exposure to the fashion industry came through a position at a clothing warehouse in his hometown of Nottingham. This opportunity eventually led to a management role at a local boutique, and eventually, he ventured into establishing his own boutique in 1970. Working alongside his girlfriend at the time, Pauline Denyer, who was a design student at the esteemed Royal College of Art, Smith honed his tailoring skills through night classes and realized his dream of creating his own fashion line.
In 1976, Smith showcased his first menswear collection in Paris, marking a significant milestone in his career. The success of this collection enabled him to expand his business and open a boutique on Floral Street in Covent Garden. The brand’s popularity transcended borders with its expansion into Japan, where the Paul Smith line became widely favored. A pivotal moment for the designer occurred in 1998 when he transformed a townhouse in London’s Notting Hill into the flagship store for his brand.
While Paul Smith’s reputation primarily stems from his expertise in the menswear industry, he also debuted his first women’s collection in 1998 at London Fashion Week. Since then, the women’s mainline collection has remained an integral part of his brand. Today, Paul Smith offers an extensive range of products under various labels, including Paul Smith, Paul Smith Women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R. Newbold (exclusive to Japan), Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoes, Paul Smith Watches, Paul Smith Pens, and Paul Smith furniture and lifestyle items. Furthermore, the designer licenses his name for the production of rugs, chinaware, spectacles, and fragrances.
Graced with numerous accolades, Paul Smith was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, recognising his status as a menswear icon and his remarkable contributions to the industry over three decades. In the same year, he launched his first fragrances, Paul Smith Men and Paul Smith Women, in collaboration with Inter Parfums Inc. Over the years, Smith has developed an extensive fragrance line, with 46 distinct perfumes in his collection. Notable perfumers, such as Hamid Merati-Kashani, Marie-Aude Couture, Olivier Pescheux, Antoine Maisondieu, Laurent Bruyere, Fanny Bal, Dominique Ropion, Antoine Lie, Jean-Pierre Bethouart, Nathalie Lorson, Alain Astori, Natalie Gracia-Cetto, Domitille Michalon Bertier, Anne Flipo, Vincent Schaller, Francoise Caron, Nathalie Feisthauer, and Barnabe Fillion, have collaborated with him to create these exquisite scents. The fragrance line spans from the earliest edition in 2000 to the newest releases in 2019, showcasing his unwavering commitment to quality and innovation.
