House Oriza L. Legrand was a distinguished provider of perfumes to the royal courts of France, England, Italy, and Russia during the 19th century. Notably, their creations adorned the Russian imperial court, including fragrances like Aux Violettes du Czar (1862), Violettes du Czar pour le Mouchoir (1896, pictured), Doubles Violettes du Czar (1900), and Parfum de l’Aigle Russe (1907). The name of the perfume House is a combination of Maison Oriza and L. Legrand. Maison Oriza, founded by renowned royal perfumer Jean-Louis Fargeon in 1720, derives its name from the play on words “or” (gold) and “riz” (rice), referring to finely powdered rice used for wigs and makeup. Louis Legrand acquired the Maison in 1811, along with the archives of perfumes and cosmetics, and established his shop on the Rue Saint-Honoré. In 1860, he passed it onto his younger and more dynamic partner, Antonin Raynaud. Under Raynaud’s guidance, the company revolutionized the industry in 1879 with the release of the world’s first perfume line, Parfumerie Oriza, complemented by cosmetic products bearing the same name and package design. While such a strategy may appear commonplace today, Raynaud was a pioneering force ahead of Houbigant, Lubin, and others in his time. The line’s success prompted Raynaud to rename the company Oriza L. Legrand. In 1887, Oriza L. Legrand patented and introduced the world’s first solid perfume, Essence Oriza Solidifiee. The entire manufacturing process, from distillation and maceration of perfume ingredients to labeling, soap production, and rice grinding for powders, was centralized at the Levallois-Perret factory. In the spring of 1890, amidst the emergence of perfume markets across Paris, offering fine fragrances at more affordable prices (Sound familiar?), Oriza L. Legrand opened an elegant luxury store on Place de la Madeleine, firmly establishing its commitment to true luxury. The company’s participation in international exhibitions garnered regular accolades, ranging from the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 to the Grand Prix in 1900. Collaborating with renowned crystal makers Baccarat since the mid-19th century, Oriza L. Legrand crafted not only perfume bottles for royalty but also exceptional crystal masterpieces. Keeping up with fashion trends of the era, the company developed several violet fragrances (as mentioned above), amber scents like Fin Comme l’Ambre (1913) and L’Ambre (1920), the chypre fragrance Chypre Mousse (1920), and oriental fragrances like Kadidja (1920) and Venise (1925). Returning to the present, let us explore the revival of Oriza L. Legrand perfumes. Four fragrances have been reintroduced, bearing the same names as their early 20th-century counterparts: Relique D’Amour (1900), Rêve d’Ossian (1905), Oeillet Louis XV (1909), and Déjà Le Printemps (1920). Designer Oriza L. Legrand boasts a collection of 29 perfumes in our fragrance base. Having been established in 1909, the brand has a remarkable history, with its newest creation dating back to 2022.
