Molyneux, the esteemed fashion brand, was established by Edward Molyneux, a renowned British designer hailing from London. Having gained experience working for the prestigious design house of Lucile, Molyneux ventured to Paris, France in 1919 to establish his own fashion house. His exceptional talent caught the attention of notable personalities, including Greta Garbo, Gertrude Lawrence, Margaret Leighton, and Vivien Leigh. The designs crafted by Molyneux gained admiration from industry icons like Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain.
During World War 2, the company headquarters were temporarily relocated to London, only to return to its beloved Paris in 1946. Notably, Molyneux also served as an infantry captain for the British Forces during this time. After retiring from the fashion world in 1950, Molyneux entrusted his design house to Jacques Griffe. However, in 1964, the designer felt a renewed passion for expressing his ideas through fashion and established Studio Molyneux, which focused on ready-to-wear collections. Unfortunately, this venture met a lukewarm reception and subsequently closed its doors in 1977.
While the fashion branch of Molyneux may have faded into dormancy, the brand’s fragrances continue to be produced and sold under its esteemed name. The Molyneux fragrance line, now owned by Perfume Berdoues, offers a collection of scents that has garnered recognition since its inception. The initial fragrance, Le Parfum Connu, first made its debut in 1925 under the name Le Numéro Cinq. An intriguing tale surrounds its naming, with rumors suggesting that Edward Molyneux and Coco Chanel engaged in a friendly competition to see whose “number 5” fragrance would achieve greater success. While the authenticity of this story remains uncertain, it is plausible that Molyneux renamed Le Numéro Cinq to La Parfum Connu if the tale holds true.
In 1932, Molyneux introduced Le Chic, a captivating floral chypre composition encompassing delightful notes of mango, peach, coconut, blackcurrant, lily of the valley, ylang-ylang, lily, jasmine, gardenia, amberwood, iris, sandalwood, cedar, vanilla, and musky accords. Another notable addition to the fragrance lineup was Fete, launched in 1962. This fragrance boasts an alluring blend of caraway, plum, peach, bergamot, Brazilian rosewood, lilac, orris root, jasmine, ylang-ylang, leather, sandalwood, benzoin, civet, oakmoss, and vanilla.
In 1971, Molyneux delighted fragrance enthusiasts with the release of Vivre. This popular floral-aldehyde composition is centered around aldehydes, coriander, green leaves, bergamot, orris, orange blossom, jasmine, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, lily-of-the-valley, rose, leather, sandalwood, tonka bean, oakmoss, vetiver, and myrrh.
Beyond these remarkable fragrances, Molyneux has further expanded its repertoire with the introduction of legendary scents like Quartz, Galoise, and Initiation, among others, until the mid-1990s. Presently, Molyneux boasts an impressive collection of 23 perfumes in its fragrance base. Collaborations with esteemed perfumers such as Jacques Vogel, Ilias Ermenidis, and Raymond Chaillan have contributed to the enduring legacy of Molyneux as an esteemed perfume house. Since its establishment in 1925, Molyneux has continued to captivate fragrance connoisseurs with its innovative creations, with its latest addition being released in 2018.
