Founded in 1849 in Grasse, France, Molinard is a renowned perfume house that holds a special place in the history of the modern perfume industry. Situated in the birthplace and epicenter of perfume creation, Molinard has deep-rooted connections to its heritage and continues to be a family-run business to this day. Initially, the brand focused on producing Eaux de Fleurs, or flower-scented waters, and Eaux de Cologne, which were sold in their quaint boutique located in the heart of Grasse.
The year 1860 marked a turning point for Molinard, as they garnered attention with the introduction of two exquisite perfumes named “Jasmin” and “Rose.” These fragrances were housed in elegant crystal bottles carefully crafted by Baccarat, a strategy that was subsequently employed for the perfumes “Mimosa” and “Violette.” Remarkably, versions of these soliflore scents are still part of Molinard’s product range today. In fact, even Queen Victoria was rumored to be an admirer of Molinard’s Eaux de Cologne, further enhancing the brand’s reputation.
Expanding its horizons in 1900, Molinard acquired an old perfume factory designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel, the architectural genius behind the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. This location has since become Molinard’s headquarters, boasting a formal showroom adorned with a magnificent collection of furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. It comes as no surprise that Molinard’s exquisite showroom and captivating fragrances quickly captivated the hearts of affluent English and Russian travelers during the early 20th century.
The year 1921 proved to be particularly momentous for Molinard. It witnessed the birth of two products that have attained enduring popularity: Habanita, originally conceived as a fragrance to flavor cigarettes but later transformed into a celebrated perfume starting from 1924, and “Concréta,” the world’s first solid perfume compacts, which incorporated alluring natural flower wax. Throughout its history, Molinard has consistently viewed bottle design as a crucial component of its aesthetic appeal. In the 1920s, the renowned bottle designer Viard created stunning scent bottles for Molinard, while in the 1930s, Molinard collaborated with master glassmaker René Lalique, resulting in the remarkable bottles for fragrances like Iles d’Or, Madrigal, and Le Baiser du Faune. Baccarat crystal workshops also contributed to Molinard’s bottle legacy by crafting exquisite perfume bottles for a range of their fragrances. Presently, Molinard’s ornate vessels grace the Molinard de Molinard and Habanita perfumes.
World War II posed significant challenges for Molinard, just as it did for the entire country of France. Demonstrating their compassion, Molinard created “the Prisoner’s parcel” to provide comfort to French prisoners during this tumultuous period. Despite adversity, Molinard persevered and celebrated its momentous 100th anniversary in 1949.
Today, Molinard continues to delight customers with its array of perfumes, soaps, body care products, candles, and aromatherapy items. Their offerings are available in stores and through tours at their locations in Grasse, Nice, and Lille, while secondary outlets across France and globally help make their products accessible to a wider audience. In the year 2009, Molinard commemorated its illustrious 160-year history by launching a special fragrance named 160, which artfully combines classic and modern elements to create a captivating floral scent.
Leading the way as the president of Molinard is Jean-Pierre Lerouge-Benard, representing the fourth generation of the family overseeing the company. With a fragrant portfolio boasting 124 perfumes, Molinard epitomizes an esteemed fragrance house. From its inception in 1849 to its most recent creation in 2023, the brand has collaborated with talented perfumer Mathieu Nardin to curate extraordinary scents that leave an indelible mark on the olfactory world.
