Mexx is a renowned global fashion brand headquartered in the Netherlands. From its humble beginnings, the company has grown to become an influential player in the fashion industry. Started by fashion designer Rattan Chadha and business partner Adu Advaney in the 1970s, initially supplying private label clothes to department and wholesale stores in the Netherlands, Mexx underwent a transformation in 1980. This led to the emergence of two popular youth clothing brands – Moustache for men and Emanuelle for women. In 1986, these two brands were merged, giving birth to the iconic brand we now know as Mexx.
The creation of the Mexx brand name was a testament to its innovative spirit. By combining the first letter “M” from Moustache, the first letter “E” from Emanuelle, and double “X” symbolizing “kiss kiss,” Mexx symbolizes a sense of passion and affection. This strategic move further solidified the brand’s presence in the market.
Driven by its ambition to diversify its offerings, Mexx expanded into children’s clothing, introducing Mexx Kids in 1990, Mexx Mini for toddlers in 1992, and Baby Mexx in 1997. The company’s growth didn’t stop there. Through lucrative licensing deals starting from 1996, Mexx successfully entered various industries, including shoes, perfume, bed and bath furnishings, glasses, and bags. This transition marked Mexx as a lifestyle brand, catering not only to fashion enthusiasts but also to those seeking quality home furnishings.
Mexx prides itself on its unique blend of “metropolitan casual” wear, drawing inspiration from the vibrant energy of city life. Their clothing and accessories embody a sophisticated and contemporary style that resonates with modern individuals. The company strategically markets its products through Mexx franchise boutiques and selective department stores, predominantly in Europe, with a notable expansion into Asia and the Middle East.
In 2001, Mexx became part of the American fashion company Liz Claiborne. However, in 2011, the brand was acquired by The Gores Group, though Liz Claiborne retained an interest in the company. As early as 1996, Mexx ventured into the world of fragrances, further solidifying its status as a lifestyle brand. The fragrances, like their clothing counterparts, target the sophisticated youth market. Vibrant packaging and carefully crafted fragrance notes emit a youthful vibe that appeals to discerning consumers. To date, Mexx has released an impressive collection of 67 perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 2000 and the latest released in 2023. Notably, these fragrances were created in collaboration with esteemed perfumers Benoist Lapouza and Nathalie Lorson.
