Matthew Williamson

Matthew Williamson is a highly acclaimed British fashion designer, renowned for his exceptional talent and unique aesthetic. Born in Birmingham, he pursued his passion for fashion by studying Fashion Design and Printed Textiles. In February 1997, Williamson, along with CEO Joseph Velosa, founded his luxury fashion house aptly named Matthew Williamson.

Williamson achieved significant success with his debut collection, ‘Electric Angels’, which he presented at London Fashion Week in 1997. The collection was characterized by vibrant exotic shades, intricate fashion details, and Williamson’s distinct design aesthetic. This initial triumph propelled him to international recognition and attracted a broader commercial audience.

In 2004, Matthew Williamson expanded his brand further by opening his first flagship store at 28 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London. Simultaneously, he also served as the Creative Director at Emilio Pucci, the Italian fashion house owned by LVMH, in 2005.

In 2007, TSM Capital acquired a significant equity stake in Matthew Williamson Holdings Ltd. Baugur Group previously invested in the company in 2006. Despite these developments, the founders retained the majority stake in the company.

A momentous occasion for the house of Matthew Williamson occurred when they celebrated their 10th anniversary in business. To commemorate this milestone, a show was organized at London Fashion Week, along with a retrospective exhibition titled “Matthew Williamson – 10 Years in Fashion” held at the revered Design Museum in London.

Matthew Williamson’s exceptional talent and contributions to the industry have been recognized with prestigious awards. Notable accolades include the Red Carpet Designer of the Year at the 2008 British Fashion Awards, Elle Designer of the Year in 2004, and the 2005 Moet and Chandon Fashion Tribute Award. He has also been nominated three times for Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

Further expanding his brand globally, Matthew Williamson ventured into the international market. The first US flagship store was opened in New York, along with a retail store in the renowned Dubai Mall, Dubai. The brand also embraced e-commerce, launching online stores for the UK, Europe, and the US.

In 2010 and 2011, Matthew Williamson delved into menswear design, offering an exclusive range available at Harrods and Matthew Williamson flagship stores.

Matthew Williamson’s influential status in the fashion industry led to renowned fashion journalist Colin McDowell publishing a book dedicated to his work in 2010. The book featured a foreword by Sienna Miller, along with contributions from Anna Wintour, Alexandra Shulman, and Diane Von Furstenberg. The release of the book was accompanied by an accompanying photographic exhibition.

Recognizing the demand for more affordable fashion options, Matthew Williamson launched a diffusion line in 2010 called MW by Matthew Williamson. This collaboration with Italian company Mariella Burani Fashion Group aimed to cater to a wider audience.

Presently, the house of Matthew Williamson produces four women’s collections annually, showcasing their commitment to innovation and quality. In addition to clothing, the brand offers an array of accessories, including belts, scarves, and perfumes. The first fragrance, Matthew Williamson for women, was introduced in 2005 and received the prestigious FiFi award for its outstanding commercial campaign. Clement Gavarry, a renowned nose in the fragrance industry, expertly curated all of Matthew Williamson’s six perfume creations, with the earliest edition launched in 2005 and the most recent in 2007.
