Marissa Zappas is a highly accomplished perfumer, scent designer, and poet, currently based in the vibrant city of New York. With a unique blend of expertise in anthropology and a deep appreciation for avant-garde perfumes of the early twentieth century, Marissa has established herself as a trailblazer in the world of perfumery.
Renowned for her ability to craft deeply personal fragrances, Marissa also collaborates with artists and writers from the illustrious New York City scene. Her ethereal and profoundly nostalgic perfumes seamlessly blend elements of fantasy, reality, gothic aesthetics, and modern sensibilities.
At the heart of Marissa’s philosophy is the belief that creating and wearing perfume serves as a pathway to evoke not just present and past selves but also future aspirations. Her dedication to this craft extends to her academic pursuits, where she delves into the history of perfumery, specifically exploring its connections to attitudes towards death and the construction of cemeteries throughout history.
During her pursuit of a Master’s Degree, Marissa honed her skills at Givaudan, integrating ethnographic training into her academic pursuits. It was during this time that her deep passion for perfumery truly flourished, as she had the invaluable opportunity to work closely as a lab apprentice under the guidance of the esteemed Master Perfumer, Olivier Gillotin. For several years, Marissa trained and refined her artistry under his expert mentorship, until 2017 when she embarked on her freelancing journey.
Currently residing in New York, Marissa Zappas has created a line of thirteen exceptional perfumes, each bearing her unique signature. As a relatively new fragrance brand, her earliest creation dates back to 2021, while her most recent offering was introduced in 2023. Every fragrance within her collection is carefully curated by Marissa herself, as she personally oversees every aspect of their creation.
