Mariella Burani, a renowned fashion designer hailing from Italy and born in Cavriago, possesses a diverse and fascinating background. Initially educated as a primary school teacher, she embarked on a new path within the fashion industry when she married the General Manager of the Burani Garment Group company. Her unique style is deeply influenced by her formative years in the Italian region of Reggio Emilia, where she attended schools starting in the fifth grade.
Mariella’s designs cater to the delicate yet strong modern woman – someone who is dynamic, who experiences both joy and sadness, and possesses an androgynous flair in her dressing. Her artistic vision of women is informed by her memories of Reggio girls clad in understated grays and muted tones, as well as the hardworking women of Cavriago who toiled in the fields. It is their imperfections that Mariella finds appealing, as they imbue them with a distinct allure.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mariella gained significant attention and popularity for her collections of children’s clothes. In these designs, she aimed to capture the innocence of childhood, all while staying true to her own childhood dream of working with children. In 1975, she was honored with the position of Head of Fashion Design at the Burani Company, cementing her reputation as a trailblazer in the industry.
Throughout her illustrious career, Mariella Burani has received numerous awards and accolades. Notably, she has been bestowed with the esteemed Italian Republic Knight Prize, as well as the prestigious Best Costume Design Prize of Hollywood. Collaborating with esteemed photographer Peter Lindbergh, Mariella created an iconic black and white campaign that encapsulates the essence of the “Mariella Burani woman.”
Today, Mariella Burani is a globally recognized brand, encompassing clothing, accessories, and fine fragrances for both men and women. With 16 exquisite perfumes in her fragrance base, the earliest edition dating back to 1993, Mariella collaborated with renowned nose Jean Jacques to develop these olfactory masterpieces.
