The history of the Cire Trudon brand dates back to 1643, when Claude Trudon became the owner of a shop on Rue Saint-Honoré. Initially, Trudon focused on trading wax and spices, manufacturing candles primarily used in churches and for internal lighting. It was during the reign of Louis XIV that Claude Trudon laid the foundation of a company that would bring fortune to his family. The candles produced by the Manufacture were made from beeswax and quickly gained popularity among the court of Louis the 15th and the largest parishes in the kingdom. Renowned for their perfectly white shade, these candles burned for an extended period without spluttering.
In 1737, Jérôme Trudon, the descendant of Claude Trudon, acquired the Manufacture Royale des Cires in Antony from Seigneur Péan de Saint-Gilles. The Trudon family’s expertise in candle-making was acknowledged in 1762 when the engineer Duhamel du Monceau published an article on the Art of Candling, citing the Manufacture as an exemplary model. Despite political and industrial revolutions, the Manufacture persevered, even surviving the emergence of electricity. In recognition of its savoir-faire, the Manufacture received a gold medal at France’s World’s Fair in 1889.
In 2007, the company adopted the name “Cire Trudon” and redirected its focus towards manufacturing perfumed candles. Today, Cire Trudon collaborates with renowned perfumers, known as “noses,” to create fragrances that convey compelling stories. Each candle is meticulously crafted by hand, honoring the legacy and skills of its founder, Claude Trudon. The brand’s commitment to luxury manufacturing remains steadfast, ensuring that every candle is a masterpiece.
In 2014, Trudon opened a store at 11 Rue Saint Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie in the Marais, an area known for its historical and quintessential Parisian charm. Today, Cire Trudon candles illuminate various corners of the world, bearing the mark of exquisite craftsmanship. In 2017, the brand expanded its offerings by introducing a personal perfume line.
