M•A•C Cosmetics is a globally renowned cosmetics brand that was founded in 1984 in Toronto, Canada by Frank Toscan and Frank Notarangelo. The brand’s first store in the United States opened in Greenwich Village, New York in 2003. The acronym M•A•C actually stands for Makeup Artist Cosmetics, reflecting the brand’s origins and commitment to serving professional makeup artists.

Toscan, a makeup artist and fashion photographer, joined forces with Notarangelo, the owner of a successful chain of hair salons, to bring their vision of a cosmetics business to life. Setting themselves apart from other cosmetic brands, M•A•C initially focused on developing products catered specifically to the needs and demands of professional makeup artists. As the brand gained popularity, their product range expanded to include offerings for consumers worldwide.

M•A•C Cosmetics has always prided itself on staying ahead of the latest trends in fashion and makeup. From glamorous looks to gothic styles and even glittery creations, the brand has consistently been at the forefront of introducing new trends to the market.

In 1998, M•A•C was fully acquired by Estée Lauder Companies. Since then, the brand has continued to flourish, offering an extensive range of makeup products in a wide array of shades. With over 160 lipstick shades and 150 eye shadow shades, M•A•C stands out for its unmatched variety.

Beyond their commitment to providing high-quality cosmetics, M•A•C Cosmetics is also dedicated to making a positive impact on society. The brand established the MAC AIDs fund in 1994, which aims to provide support and financial assistance to individuals affected by AIDS. The fund is solely financed by the sale of their Viva Glam products, with 100% of the sales proceeds going directly to the fund. Since its inception, the MAC AIDs fund has successfully raised a remarkable $128 million.

In addition to the MAC AIDs fund, the brand has implemented various social initiatives. M•A•C prides itself on being cruelty-free, meaning that their products are not tested on animals, and this policy extends to their ingredient suppliers as well. The Back 2 M•A•C Recycling program encourages customers to return six empty M•A•C containers in exchange for a free lip gloss, eyeshadow, or lipstick at any M•A•C location. Furthermore, the M•A•C Kids Helping Kids project, launched in 1994, involves children living with HIV/AIDS creating images that are reproduced as greeting cards, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting participating organizations.

Alongside their cosmetics line, M•A•C has ventured into the fragrance industry, collaborating with perfumers Firmenich and Cecile Krakower to create a collection of 20 unique perfumes. The fragrance range showcases the brand’s dedication to innovation and creativity.
