Lucien Lelong, a renowned French fashion designer, made a lasting impact on the haute couture scene during the 1920s to the 1940s. Alongside notable contemporaries such as Chanel, Worth, Patou, Lanvin, and Schiaparelli, Lelong’s contributions solidified his place in fashion history.
Born in Paris in 1889, Lelong’s journey into the world of fashion began under the tutelage of his father, who owned a textile shop. At the age of 22, he further honed his skills at the prestigious Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Paris from 1911 to 1913. By 1914, Lelong had already unveiled his first collection, showcasing his innate talent and creative vision.
In 1919, Lelong established his eponymous fashion house, which quickly gained immense influence in the bustling Parisian fashion scene. Renowned for his expert knowledge of fabrics, he became a reputable figure in the industry. Additionally, Lelong held the esteemed position of President of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture for numerous years, showcasing his significant impact and leadership within the fashion community. Notably, Lelong was also one of the trailblazers in the field of ready-to-wear fashion, pioneering highly profitable collections that resonated with a wider audience.
In 1924, Lelong ventured into the world of perfumery, recognizing its integral role in a woman’s style and allure. Drawing inspiration from his own designs and the alluring essence of women, Lelong founded The Société des Parfums Lucien Lelong. Even after closing the doors to his fashion house, his perfumery business continued to flourish, leaving a lasting legacy. Interestingly, Lelong’s protégés, Dior and Balmain, were inspired by their mentor’s success in perfumery, subsequently launching their own fragrance lines upon establishing their respective fashion houses.
Lelong’s initial fragrance creations, aptly named A, B, C, J, and N, exuded an aura of mystery and romance. Displaying Lelong’s artistic flair, the beautifully crafted bottles often bore the designer’s personal touch. Throughout his career, Lelong crafted a total of 27 distinct fragrances, each capturing a unique essence.
While ill health led Lelong to close his fashion house in 1948, his perfumery business continued under his guidance until his passing in 1958 and beyond. Today, Lucien Lelong remains an esteemed perfume house with eight perfumes in our fragrance base. The earliest creation dates back to 1934, while the most recent release graced the shelves in 1999. Jean Carles, a skilled nose, worked alongside Lelong to create these iconic scents that have stood the test of time.
