Loewe is a renowned Spanish clothing and luxury goods brand with its headquarters in Madrid. The company has a rich history, dating back to its establishment in 1846, when a group of skilled leather craftsmen came together and opened a shop in Madrid’s bustling commercial district. The brand truly flourished in 1872 with the arrival of German leather craftsmen Enrique Roessberg Loewe, who shared a deep affection for Spanish culture. Working alongside the craftsmen in Madrid, Loewe played a pivotal role in establishing the brand’s identity.
By 1892, Loewe had firmly established itself as the premier destination for exquisite leather goods in Madrid. The brand’s reputation garnered the attention of King Alfonso XII, who appointed Loewe as the Official Supplier to the Royal House in 1905. This esteemed title further solidified Loewe’s standing in the industry.
Expanding beyond Madrid, Loewe opened its second shop in Barcelona in 1923, marking the beginning of its growth across Spain. The business officially passed down to Enrique Loewe Knapp, the grandson of the founder, in 1934, and he continued the brand’s expansion efforts. A significant turning point for Loewe occurred in 1945, when the company introduced its first model of the box calf bag. This iconic design would go on to become the brand’s signature product, propelling Loewe’s international expansion during the 1960s.
The 1970s brought further strides for Loewe, as the brand ventured into women’s ready-to-wear fashion with contributions from renowned designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, and Laura Biagiotti. Silk goods and the distinctive Loewe monogram were also developed during this time, accompanied by the brand’s initial foray into fragrances. In 1972, Loewe introduced L de Loewe, its first fragrance for women, followed by Loewe Loewe for men in 1974.
Loewe found great success in the Asian market, particularly in Japan, with the first store opening there in 1976. Presently, Loewe maintains over 35 active stores in Japan, highlighting the brand’s ongoing popularity and relevance in the region.
In 1987, Loewe formed a partnership with the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, enabling further international expansion. LVMH assumed full control of the company in 1996 and enlisted Narciso Rodriguez as the designer for Loewe’s women’s wear collection. Stuart Vevers was later appointed Creative Director of Loewe in 2008, contributing to the brand’s continuous evolution.
Loewe continues to offer fragrances through its collaboration with LVMH. Among its diverse range of scents, Aire Loewe, introduced in 1985, remains a beloved fragrance in the Spanish market. With a wide selection of perfumes, Loewe has released 110 editions to date, with the first fragrance dating back to 1972 and the latest released in 2023. Perfumers such as Núria Cruelles Borrull, Carlos Benaim, Yves Cassar, Olivier Cresp, Emilio Valeros, Alberto Morillas, Celine Barel, and Sonia Constant have all contributed to the creation of Loewe fragrances, showcasing the brand’s commitment to excellence in scent.
