Liz Claiborne is a renowned fashion company that originated in 1976 in New York City, founded by the talented Belgian-born designer, Liz Claiborne, along with her husband Art Ortenberg and business partners Leonard Boxer and Jerome Chazen. The brand emerged during a time when women were entering the workforce in significant numbers, and it quickly gained recognition by offering a unique concept of mix-and-match women’s separates that were conveniently grouped as a single collection within their stores. This forward-thinking approach was groundbreaking at the time and contributed to the immediate success of both the clothing and the concept itself.
In 1980, Liz Claiborne expanded its offerings by including a line of accessories, further establishing itself as a comprehensive fashion brand. Shortly after, the company introduced a men’s line simply known as “Claiborne.” An impressive milestone was achieved when Liz Claiborne became the first company founded by a woman to enter the prestigious Fortune 500 list. In 1989, Liz Claiborne and Art Ortenberg retired from their positions in the company’s management.
Following their retirement, the company’s management team seized various opportunities to acquire emerging fashion brands of the late 1990s and early 2000s, such as Juicy Couture, Mexx, and Lucky. This strategic move further propelled the growth and diversification of the Liz Claiborne brand.
In 1986, Liz Claiborne introduced its inaugural fragrance for women, Liz Claiborne for Women, packaged in the distinctive triangle bottle. The success of this debut fragrance led to the launch of Claiborne, the first fragrance catered specifically to men, in 1989. Unfortunately, Liz Claiborne passed away in 2007, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the fashion industry.
In 2008, Elizabeth Arden acquired the rights to all fragrances associated with the Liz Claiborne brand, including Lucky, Juicy Couture, and the beloved Curve series. This acquisition further solidified Elizabeth Arden’s position as a prominent player in the fragrance market.
To date, designer Liz Claiborne has an impressive lineup of 51 fragrances in our fragrance base. The earliest edition dating back to 1986, while the most recent addition is from 2021. These fragrances are the result of collaborations with esteemed perfumers such as Calice Becker, Pascal Gaurin, Olivier Polge, Jean Claude Delville, Laurent Le Guernec, Loc Dong, Jean-Marc Chaillan, Pierre Negrin, Carlos Viñals, Nicholas Calderone, Carlos Benaim, and Harry Fremont.
