Pino Lancetti, an accomplished Italian fashion designer hailing from Gualdo Tadino, made a significant impact on the haute couture scene in Italy from the 1950s until his retirement in 2001. Despite initially intending to pursue a career in ceramics, Lancetti’s passion for clothing ignited during his studies at the art institute in Perugia.
In the early stages of his career, Lancetti opened a small atelier in Rome and sold freelance sketches to fashion salons, eventually landing a design role at the esteemed house of Carosa. As Italian fashion houses began establishing their alta moda salons in Rome, Lancetti followed suit in 1961. One of his earliest collections was showcased at the illustrious Pitti Palace in Florence, where he joined forces with esteemed designers like Fabiani, Capucci, Mila Schon, and Valentino for Rome’s fashion shows.
Throughout his career, Lancetti drew inspiration from renowned artists such as Kandinsky, Picasso, Modigliani, and Matisse. His visits to galleries profoundly influenced his creative process, lending a distinctive cut and construction to his designs. Furthermore, oriental and folk decoration, as well as the world of cinema, served as additional sources of inspiration for Lancetti’s work.
Lancetti garnered a following among affluent women who appreciated the luxury and exquisite quality of his garments. Notable clients such as Princess Soraya, Queen Paola of Belgium, Salima Aga Khan, and actresses Silvana Mangano and Monica Vitti admired his unique beaded dresses. In 1963, the designer shifted his focus towards producing garments suitable for everyday wear. He achieved success with a collection highlighting military details and leather but refrained from creating ordinary attire like jeans due to his firm belief in the importance of women’s elegance.
One of Lancetti’s standout collections was dedicated to Picasso and debuted at the prestigious French Academy at Villa Medici in 1986. In the 1990s, faced with difficulties in finding skilled craftsmen capable of executing his meticulous designs, Lancetti restructured his company. He ventured into licensing deals, introducing new labels for cashmere knits, bridal dresses, and expanding into men’s clothing and accessories. Seeking to modernize the Lancetti image, he also created additional labels, including “Miss Francesca” and “Lancetti & Company.”
Lancetti received numerous accolades throughout his career, with one of his most significant achievements being the Alta Moda award in 2000, which celebrated his collection’s exquisite beauty and elegance. While Lancetti devoted himself to painting in his later years, his fashion empire continued to thrive. Notably, the designer has also left his mark in the perfumery world, with a fragrance collection featuring 26 unique scents, including collaborations with perfumers Paolo Cerizza, Mark Buxton, and Arturetto Landi.
