Founded in 1954 in Bologna, Italy, La Perla is a renowned lingerie designer that has made a significant impact in the fashion industry. The company, named after the luxurious jeweler’s case lined in exquisite red velvet, was established by Ada Masotti, a skilled corset-maker. With a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail, La Perla quickly became known for its use of opulent fabrics, such as Leaver’s Lace, a delicate lace produced on traditional looms, and traditional Italian stitching techniques, including the intricate Florentine embroidered inlay technique known as Frastaglio.
Over the years, La Perla has created several iconic designs that have become synonymous with the brand. One notable example is the Triangle Bra, first introduced in the 1970s, which has remained a staple in their collections. Additionally, in the same decade, La Perla expanded its offerings to include swimwear, capitalizing on the success of its luxurious lingerie. To attract a more youthful and playful market, the company introduced the lingerie line Malizia in the 1980s.
In 1986, La Perla made its elegant foray into the world of fragrances with the introduction of the original La Perla fragrance. Packaged in a curvaceous bottle that mirrors the feminine form, this scent embodies the sophistication and allure that has become synonymous with the brand. As the years went by, La Perla’s popularity soared both nationally and internationally, with the opening of boutiques in renowned fashion capitals like Milan and Paris.
In 2002, the brand expanded further by venturing into the world of Ready-to-wear. True to the luxurious traditions of the house, the collection showcases feminine fashions crafted from sumptuous silk and airy chiffon, adorned with the delicate embroidered details for which La Perla’s lingerie is so revered. In 2003, the brand unveiled La Perla Black Label, a collection that exudes seduction and sex appeal, revealing a new facet of La Perla’s creative vision.
In 2008, La Perla experienced a change in ownership when it was acquired by JH Partners, an investment group based in San Francisco. This new partnership allowed La Perla to continue its legacy of excellence and innovation in the world of luxury lingerie. Collaborating with Morris Profumi, La Perla has developed a range of fragrances that capture the essence of the brand. To date, the house has created 49 perfumes in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Olivier Polge, Daniela (Roche) Andrier, Pierre Bourdon, and Nathalie Feisthauer, among others.
