Joan Vass

Leveraging her educational background in philosophy and aesthetics, Joan Vass embarked on a career in the art world. Commencing her journey as an assistant curator of drawing and prints at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art, she further honed her skills by editing art books for Harry N. Abrams and contributing as a columnist for Art in America. It was during this period that Joan’s fascination with hand knits and crochets flourished. Collaborating with local women skilled in these crafts, she created her initial collection of hats and mufflers, which caught the discerning eye of renowned fashion authority Henri Bendel and sold out rapidly. This pivotal moment transformed Joan from an art observer into an art creator.

Incorporated in 1977, Joan established her namesake collection, which expanded to include unisex sweaters. Continuing to work with the same pool of talented local artisans, the designs showcased uniqueness, limited availability, and exquisite craftsmanship. The demand for Joan’s distinctive, unstructured knitwear experienced significant growth throughout the 1980s, leading to large-scale production at Signal Knitting Mills in South Carolina under the label Joan Vass USA. The collection evolved to encompass a complete wardrobe, comprising sweaters, trousers, skirts, and dresses. Despite these expansions, the brand’s aesthetic remained constant, characterized by fine fabrics, natural fibers, and timeless designs that defy seasonal limitations.

Joan Vass’s approach, rooted in the elimination of excess and the creation of a collection with enduring appeal, garnered her numerous accolades in the fashion industry. Notable honors include the Extraordinary Women in Fashion award from the Smithsonian Institute, the Coty American Fashion Critics award, and the Prince Machiavelli Prix de Cachet award.

Today, the Joan Vass brand continues with a renewed perspective. Built upon a tradition of luxurious knitwear established over three decades ago, the current collection epitomizes understated elegance. Classic silhouettes have been revitalized through the meticulous selection of fabrics that envelop the body in comfortable luxury. Soft silk cashmere sweaters, intricate knit jacquards, jersey materials, and interlocks are crafted in ways that pay homage to Joan Vass’s unique aesthetic.
