Jesus Del Pozo was a highly esteemed Spanish fashion designer, best known for his contributions to the modernization of Spanish style. Born in Madrid in 1946, he embarked on his career during the transitional period from the Franco dictatorship to democracy. This era of change, known as La Movida, greatly influenced Del Pozo’s artistic vision and played a vital role in shaping his design philosophy.
Establishing his first boutique in 1974 on Almirante Street, a renowned cultural hub in Madrid, Del Pozo drew inspiration from both the rich heritage of Spanish couture, including iconic figures like Cristobal Balenciaga, and his own unique perspective. His approach involved a deep appreciation for individual beauty and a commitment to presenting it without unnecessary embellishments or gimmicks.
Del Pozo’s designs were not merely fashion; they were considered art, akin to sculptures. Embodying an “intellectual” approach, his creations were meticulously crafted, reflecting his thoughtful research and deep discussions. His ultimate goal was to promote positivity and celebrate the diversity of women, allowing each individual to shine through their personal style.
While initially designing for men, Del Pozo found greater success in women’s fashion. His inaugural women’s collection debuted in 1976 and garnered significant acclaim. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Needle award in 1981, the National Award Cristobal Balenciaga in 1989, and the pioneering distinction of being the first fashion designer to receive the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 1998.
In the 1990s, Del Pozo expanded his brand’s offerings by introducing ready-to-wear and bridal wear collections. Additionally, he ventured into the world of perfumery, launching his first fragrance for women, Duende, in 1992. Perfumes quickly became a vital component of the Del Pozo brand, with the internationally renowned Halloween (1997) becoming a best-seller and inspiring a series of limited editions and flankers in subsequent years.
Tragically, Del Pozo passed away in August 2011, leaving behind a profound legacy. His exquisite fashions not only left an indelible imprint on Spain’s history but also exemplified a commitment to education and professionalism within the fashion industry. Today, the Jesus Del Pozo brand boasts an impressive fragrance collection, with 32 perfumes crafted in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Marie Salamagne, Christine Nagel, Francis Kurkdjian, and Alberto Morillas, to name a few. From the earliest edition in 1992 to the most recent release in 2021, these fragrances continue to captivate and enchant.
