Jacomo

Jacomo was established in the late 1960s when James Kaplan, an American, and Gerard Courtin, a Frenchman, met on New York’s prestigious 5th Avenue. Sharing a deep passion for art, music, and design, they joined forces to create the fashion brand known as “Jacomo.” The name derived from combining the “Ja” in James, the “Co” in Courtin, and the addition of the “Mo” to infuse a musical touch. Their boutique in New York became a hub for offering their innovative designs to the stylish trendsetters of the era.

In 1970 (according to some sources, 1974), Jacomo achieved great success with the launch of their inaugural fragrance for men, Eau Cendrée. Packaged in an eye-catching geometric design, it quickly garnered attention and acclaim. The subsequent year welcomed the release of its female counterpart, Chicane. The fragrance that truly solidified Jacomo’s presence in the industry came in 1972 with the launch of the timeless feminine scent, Silences, which remains in production to this day. Recognizable by its distinct round black bottle, Silences became a cornerstone of the brand.

To further develop their enterprise, Jacomo later acquired production facilities in Deauville. Continually dedicated to design, the brand continued to captivate perfume enthusiasts throughout the 1980s and 1990s with a string of successful fragrance launches. Notable among them was the introduction of the iconic men’s scent, Jacomo de Jacomo, in 1980. Subsequently, the brand unveiled Parfum Rare for women in 1985, presented in a distinctive trapezoid bottle, which was later renamed Coeur de Parfum.

In the 1990s, Jacomo introduced a series of fragrance duos. Anthracite, comprising fragrances for both men and women, debuted in 1991. This was followed by Paradox for Women in 1998, later accompanied by its male counterpart, Paradox for Men, in 1999. In 2003, these scents were rebranded as Paradox Blue upon the release of the Paradox Green duo. The Aura pair, featuring bottles in vivid green and yellow hues, followed suit in 2000.

The French company Sarbec Cosmetics acquired Parfums Jacomo in 1995, leading the brand in a fresh direction during the second decade of the 21st century. While Jacomo continues to produce its classic fragrances from the 1970s to the early 2000s, the company embarked on a new venture in 2010 with the Art Collection series. Drawing inspiration from pieces in the founders’ personal collections, each fragrance in the Art Collection is named after a corresponding number in the collection. This line aims to reintroduce Jacomo to a modern audience, embracing luxury and contemporary allure.

In 2011, Jacomo expanded on its “pair” concept, presenting the It’s Me collection for Men and Women. Sporting sleek, modern packaging and featuring trendy scents, this collection aligns with current tastes and preferences.

Jacomo boasts a fragrance base of 33 perfumes, with the earliest edition crafted in 1970 and the most recent in 2022. These fragrances have been created in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Mark Buxton, Henri Bergia, Edouard Flechier, Jean-Claude Astier, Christian Mathieu, Bernard Ellena, Marie-Aude Couture, Mathilde Bijaoui, Sébastien Martin, Mane, Daniel Moliere, Christine Nagel, Jean-Claude Niel, and Serge Majoullier.
