Issey Miyake, a renowned Japanese fashion designer, has gained international acclaim for his groundbreaking work with fabrics and his application of technology in the creation of innovative and functional garments. Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Miyake’s experiences as a witness and survivor of the atomic bombing during World War II shaped his unique perspective on design.
After completing his studies in graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Miyake honed his skills by working alongside some of the most notable couturiers of the 1960s. This included positions at prestigious fashion houses such as Guy Laroche and Givenchy in Paris, as well as a stint designing ready-to-wear collections for Geoffrey Beene in New York.
In 1970, Miyake returned to Tokyo and established the Miyake Design Studio, where he began producing his own line of women’s fashion. He brought a deep understanding of fabrics to his work, which led to his pioneering development of garment pleating techniques. By using a heat press to add permanent pleats to pre-cut and sewn garments, Miyake revolutionized the fashion industry.
Among his notable creations is the A-POC (a piece of clothing) line, consisting of fabric tubes that can be uniquely cut and styled by the wearer. Additionally, the me Issey Miyake line, also known as “Cauliflower” outside of Asia, offers one-size-fits-all shirts that stretch to accommodate different body shapes, conveniently packaged in plastic tubes.
While officially retiring from design in 1997, Miyake has remained closely involved in overseeing all aspects of his eponymous brand. His designs often incorporate humor and clever wordplay, utilizing multilingual puns. For instance, A-POC sounds like the English word “Epoch,” adding an extra layer of meaning to his creations. When Miyake launched his first fragrance, L’eau d’Issey for women, in 1992, it was deliberately named to phonetically resemble the French word l’Odyssée (meaning “odyssey” in English). This playfulness continues with A Scent by Issey Miyake, released in 2009, which can be interpreted as “ascent by Issey Miyake.”
Miyake’s influence extends into other creative ventures, as he operates the ELLTOB TEP store in Japan, featuring his entire product line. Notably, the store’s name is “pet bottle” spelled backward, adding a whimsical touch. Issey Miyake fragrances are produced in collaboration with Beauté Prestige International, a division of Shiseido. To date, Miyake has released a total of 111 perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1992 and the newest being unveiled in 2023. These fragrances have been crafted by esteemed perfumers such as Jacques Cavallier, Olivier Cresp, Alberto Morillas, Christophe Raynaud, Marie Salamagne, Dora Baghriche, Daphné Bugey, Aurelien Guichard, Fabrice Pellegrin, Ane Ayo, Nathalie Lorson, Dominique Ropion, Fanny Bal, and Loc Dong.
