Hové Parfumeur, Ltd. is an esteemed perfumery that has been family-owned and operated in New Orleans, Louisiana since its establishment in 1931 by Mrs. Alvin Hovey-King. With a heritage rooted in a love for fragrance creation passed down from her Creole French mother, Mrs. Hovey-King’s passion took her on a lifelong journey of exploration while accompanying her military father and later, her military husband.

In the wake of the stock market crash of 1929, which devastated the family’s investment business, Mrs. Hovey-King bravely opened Hové at 529 Royal Street, cleverly naming it after her own last name. The business flourished and in 1938, it relocated to 723 Toulouse Street, where it gracefully operated for the next four and a half decades. Mrs. Hovey-King resided in the elegant quarters on the second floor until her passing in 1961, and the reins of Hové were then passed onto her daughter, Mrs. Jules A. de Fazende Yokum.

Under the stewardship of Mrs. Yokum, the business not only thrived but was also expanded. In 1970, Mrs. Julie van Calsem IV, Mrs. Yokum’s daughter, joined as her partner. The mother-daughter duo worked diligently to elevate Hové’s standing in the industry. By 1982, the growing demands of the business necessitated a move to 824 Royal Street. In 1987, Mr. van Calsem became involved with the firm, and following his wife’s passing in 1989, he became the first male custodian of the Hové legacy.

Mr. Willem F. van Calsem and his current wife, Barbara Ann Downs, diligently carried on the tradition of excellence until their retirement in 2003. At this juncture, their niece, Amy van Calsem Wendel, who had also been involved with Hové for several years, along with her husband Bill Wendel, eagerly stepped forward to continue the esteemed perfume tradition of the family. In July of 2011, the Wendel family relocated Hové to its fourth and current home in the French Quarter, situated at 434 Chartres St., occupying a historic building dating back to 1809.
