Founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermes, a French luxury goods house, Hermès has established itself as a prominent name in the industry. While initially focused on equestrian accessories, the company has expanded its offerings over time, encompassing leather handbags, scarves, accessories, fashion, and fragrance.
The brand’s ventures into the world of perfumery commenced in 1951 with the creation of Eau d’Hermès, a masterpiece composed by renowned perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. This marked the beginning of a remarkable fragrance journey for Hermès. In 1961, at the impetus of Jean-René Guerrand, son-in-law of Émile Hermès and founder of the fragrance division, perfumer Guy Robert crafted Calèche, the brand’s inaugural women’s perfume. This exceptional creation instantly propelled Hermès into the forefront of modern perfumery.
Since then, Hermès has continued to collaborate with esteemed perfumers, each adding their signature touch to the brand’s olfactory portfolio. A pivotal moment arrived in 2004 when Jean-Claude Ellena, a revered in-house perfumer known for his artistic prowess, joined the team. With an innate understanding of olfactory emotion and a shared appreciation for craftsmanship and expertise, Ellena’s arrival solidified Hermès’ commitment to fragrance creation.
The encounter between Edmond Roudnitska and Émile Hermès, the grandson of founder Thierry Hermès, gave birth to Eau d’Hermès, which remains an emblem of French perfumery excellence. In 2003, Ellena’s collaboration with the brand resulted in the creation of Un Jardin en Méditerranée. This fruitful partnership led to his official appointment as Hermès’ exclusive perfumer in 2004. Since then, the synergy between the fragrance designer and Hermès has remained steadfast, continuously yielding exceptional fragrances.
Jean-Claude Ellena finds himself both the recipient and custodian of a rich genealogy, comprised of four distinctive olfactive territories: the Colognes, the Garden-Perfumes, the Novel-Perfumes, and the Hermessence collection. This artistic evolution showcases the brand’s dedication to pushing boundaries and maintaining its standing as a frontrunner in the fragrance industry.
With an extensive fragrance base of 126 perfumes, Hermès bears testament to its longstanding history and influence in the realm of olfactory art.
