Helmut Lang is a highly acclaimed Austrian artist and fashion designer born in Vienna, currently residing and working in New York and on Long Island. With the establishment of his trademark in 1978 and his first international presentation at Centre Georges Pompidou in 1986, Lang quickly rose to prominence in the fashion industry. However, in 1995, he made the bold decision to leave fashion behind and focus on his passion for art.
Lang’s unique contributions to fashion design in the late 20th century and early 2000s cannot be overstated. He pushed boundaries by incorporating unconventional materials into the urban uniform and revolutionized the silhouette of the era. Additionally, Lang made history by being the first designer to stream his collection online, completely transforming the way in which fashion is communicated.
Beyond his groundbreaking work in fashion, Lang has also collaborated with renowned artists such as Jenny Holzer and Louise Bourgeois. His recent artistic endeavors explore abstract sculptural forms, physical arrangements, and space outside the confines of the human body. In 2008, Lang organized his first solo art exhibition titled “ALLES GLEICH SCHWER” at the esteemed Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover.
Not only is Lang a pioneer in the world of fashion and art, but he has also ventured into the realm of fragrance. In the early 2000s, he introduced three distinct fragrances: Cuiron pour Homme, a Woody Chypre fragrance for men launched in 2002; Eau de Cologne, an Oriental Woody fragrance for men launched in 2000; and Eau de Parfum, launched in 2000. These fragrances garnered immense praise from perfume enthusiasts. Although they were eventually discontinued, their allure persisted, making them highly coveted collector’s items. As a result, a re-launch was sparked in 2014, maintaining the iconic square bottles with minimalist black and white labels. This time, the fragrances were marketed as unisex.
In total, Helmut Lang has a remarkable collection of seven perfumes. The earliest edition was created in 2000, with the newest fragrance released in 2014. To create these unique scents, Lang collaborated with esteemed perfumers Francoise Caron, Quest, Dragoco, and Maurice Roucel.
