Madame Alix Grès, born Germaine Emilie Krebs in 1903 in Paris, France, initially aspired to be a sculptor before transitioning to women’s hat-making. In 1934, she established her first fashion house called “Alex Couture,” marking her entrance into the world of couture. Madame Grès had a unique approach to designing gowns, working directly on the bodies of her models, which reflected her sculptor’s mindset. Her exceptional talent quickly garnered attention, and she became renowned as “The Star of Elegance,” creating garments for esteemed clientele such as royal families, aristocracy, and notable figures including Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, and Vivien Leigh. One of her early sources of inspiration was Isadora Duncan.
After marrying Russian painter Serge Czerefkov in 1937, Madame Grès changed her name to Madame Grès in 1942, combining an anagram of her husband’s name with his alias. Unfortunately, not long after their marriage, her husband departed for French Polynesia and did not return. Throughout World War II and the German occupation of France, Madame Grès’s patriotism shone through her designs, which prominently featured the colors of the French flag: blue, white, and red.
In 1958, Madame Grès created her first fragrance, Cabochard, after a trip to India. This perfume drew inspiration from a new wave of scents, including Tabac Blond (1919), Cuir de Russie (1924), Scandal (1933), and Bandit (1944). In 1982, she had to sell her perfume business to ensure the continuity of her Haute Couture house. Subsequently, the ownership of Parfums Grès changed hands multiple times before being acquired by Silvio Denz in 2001. Today, Parfums Grès is headquartered in Switzerland. Under the new ownership, the first fragrances released were Cabaret (2003), followed by Cabaret Homme (2004) and Caline (2005).
Madame Grès passed away in 1993 at her residence in the South of France. However, her death was not publicly announced until a year later, on December 14, 1994, in Le Monde. Grès has an extensive collection of 58 perfumes in its fragrance base, with the earliest edition dating back to 1959 and the most recent launch in 2019. Throughout its history, Grès perfumes have been created in collaboration with renowned perfumers, including Max Gavarry, Domitille Michalon Bertier, Jean Claude Delville, Jean-Pierre Bethouart, Michel Almairac, Pierre Bourdon, Bernard Chant, Dorothée Piot, Sidonie Lancesseur, Richard Ibanez, Mylène Alran, Christine Nagel, Thomas Fontaine, Vincent Schaller, Marie Salamagne, Delphine Lebeau, Benoist Lapouza, Thierry Wasser, Henri Bergia, Nathalie Lorson, Emilie Bouge, Irene Farmachidi, Sophie Labbe, Gerard Anthony, Jean-Christophe Hérault, Amandine Clerc-Marie, Robert Gonnon, Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, and Alexandra Monet.
