Gloria Vanderbilt is a multi-talented individual who has excelled in various fields such as art, acting, design, writing, socializing, and as an heiress of one of America’s prominent families dating back to the 19th century. Her great-great grandfather, Cornelius Vanderbilt, amassed significant wealth through his ventures in the shipping and railroad industries. Vanderbilt initially pursued a career as a fine artist and later transitioned into commercial art and design. In 1968, she began creating designs for Hallmark greeting cards and also worked with Bloomcraft, a textile manufacturer, creating designs for tableware.
Vanderbilt’s initial entry into the fashion world started with the design of a series of scarves for Glentex, a manufacturer. This endeavor caught the attention of Indian businessman Mohan Murjani, who offered her the opportunity to design jeans. Coinciding with the rise of the designer jeans trend in the late 1970s, Vanderbilt’s jeans, adorned with her distinctive signature in script and her swan logo, achieved immediate success. In 1978, Vanderbilt sold the rights to her name to the Murjani group, subsequently establishing her own fashion company, GV Ltd.
Collaborating with L’Oreal, Vanderbilt ventured into the fragrance industry between 1982 and 2002. Her initial creation, the signature fragrance Vanderbilt for women, became a popular mass-market perfume during the 1980s. Over the years, designer Gloria Vanderbilt has developed a total of 17 perfumes, with the earliest edition launching in 1982 and the latest scheduled for release in 2023. Notable perfumers such as Laurent Bruyere, Dora Baghriche, Sonia Constant, Christine Nagel, Francis Kurkdjian, Sophia Grojsman, Olivier Pescheux, and Olivier Gillotin have contributed their expertise to the creation of Gloria Vanderbilt fragrances.
