Gianfranco Ferré, widely known as the “Architect of Fashion,” was a renowned Italian designer whose unique background in architecture greatly influenced his designs. Born in Legnano, Italy, Ferré obtained a degree in architecture from Politecnico di Milano. Despite his architectural training, he quickly dove into the fashion industry, starting off as an accessories designer and then transitioning to raincoat design. In 1974, Ferré established his own company, Baila, which marked his foray into women’s fashion. He presented his first signature women’s collection in 1978, followed by a men’s collection in 1982, and ultimately debuted his haute couture line in 1986.
In 1989, Ferré was appointed as the Stylistic Director of Christian Dior, splitting his time between Paris and his own fashion house in Milan. He remained with Dior until 1997 when he decided to focus solely on designing under his own name. Ferré’s designs showcased his strong connection to architecture, evident through their structured forms and clean lines. His iconic crisp white shirts, often adorned with layered cuffs or ruffles, solidified his reputation in the fashion industry.
Beyond his design work, Ferré contributed to the relationship between architecture and fashion by becoming a founding professor in the Department of Fashion Design at Milan’s Domus Academy, a renowned post-graduate school for design. Throughout his career, Ferré received numerous awards, including the prestigious Occhio d’Oro (“Golden Eye”) fashion award for Best Italian Designer, which he won six times. He also received the De D’Or (“Golden Thimble”) award for his inaugural haute couture collection at Dior.
Ferré’s fashion offerings spanned various labels, including Gianfranco Ferré (women’s), Ferré (ready-to-wear for men and women, formerly known as the “White Label”), GF Ferré (sporty fashions for younger men and women), Ferré Milano (casual wear), and Gianfranco Ferré Fragrances. The first fragrance released under his brand, Gianfranco Ferré for Women, debuted in 1984. Many of his fragrances incorporate his name, such as Gianfranco, Ferré, or Gianfranco Ferré. Sadly, Gianfranco Ferré passed away in 2007 at the age of 62, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. The fashion house continues under the creative direction of Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi, while ITF Cosmetics holds the fragrance license, ensuring that fragrances continue to be produced under the Ferré brand. To date, Gianfranco Ferre has created 32 perfumes, with the oldest dating back to 1984 and the newest released in 2019. Throughout his career, Ferré collaborated with esteemed perfumers, including Alex Lee, Pierre Bourdon, Michèle Saramito, Nicolas Beaulieu, Nathalie Lorson, Mark Buxton, Alexandra Jouet, Francis Kurkdjian, Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, Maurice Roucel, Jean-Charles Niel, Olivier Polge, and Alienor Massenet.
