Gai Mattiolo, an esteemed Italian fashion designer, embarked on his journey in the industry at the young age of 19. With the generous financial support from his father, he utilized this opportunity to establish a boutique in the vibrant city of Rome. Despite lacking formal training as a fashion designer, Mattiolo’s impeccable attention to detail became the hallmark of his creations. He displayed an exceptional talent for crafting exquisite buttons, often resembling small sculptures, using only the finest materials. Each new collection saw him meticulously researching and developing unique button designs.
The success of Mattiolo’s inaugural collection propelled him onto the prestigious catwalks of Paris and Milan, where renowned supermodels of the 1980s and 1990s showcased his exceptional designs. Vibrant colors, meticulous tailoring, and unparalleled luxury materials, such as platinum threads, precious stone embellishments, and thousands of delicate gold beads, became the defining elements of Mattiolo’s creations. His exceptional talent caught the attention of numerous celebrities, with the likes of Cher, Diana Ross, and Pink adorned in his designs. A significant milestone in Mattiolo’s career was when he had the immense honor of creating four copes (ecclesiastical robes) for Pope John Paul II in 1996.
In 2000, Mattiolo coined a neologism to encapsulate his innovative designs: prêt-à-couture. This term represented the fusion of high fashion luxury with exquisite craftsmanship from the handicraft industry. Fragrances became an integral part of the Gai Mattiolo brand, with the launch of his signature scent for women in 1997. These fragrances are currently created in collaboration with ITF Cosmetics. The Gai Mattiolo fragrance collection boasts an impressive selection of 15 perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1997 and the newest addition released in 2009. Perfumers such as Jean Claude Delville, Maurice Roucel, Alberto Morillas, Mark Buxton, Bernard Ellena, Alain Astori, Beatrice Piquet, and IFF have all contributed their expertise to the creation of these captivating scents.
