Frederic Malle, the creative force behind Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle, has left an indelible mark on the niche fragrance industry. Born into a family deeply rooted in the perfume world, with his grandfather having founded Christian Dior Perfumes and his mother working as an Art Director for the same esteemed perfume house, Frederic’s upbringing exposed him to the inner workings of the industry from a young age.
Initially pursuing Art History in New York, Frederic experienced a transformative moment in 1986 when he accepted a position at the renowned perfume laboratory, Roure Bertrand Dupont. Under the guidance of industry experts, he delved into the intricacies of raw ingredients, composition, and the entire spectrum of perfume creation. It was during this time that Frederic embarked on a notable collaboration with fellow perfumer Pierre Bourdon, resulting in the creation of Mark Birley for Men in 1996.
With over 15 years of experience under his belt, Frederic felt compelled to embark on a new venture. In 2000, armed with his profound connections and extensive industry expertise, he invited nine distinguished perfumers to craft their own original fragrances, granting them complete creative freedom and unrestricted access to the finest ingredients and technologies. Unconventionally, these scents were packaged in bottles bearing the perfumer’s name, defying the industry norm where credit is typically attributed to fashion houses or celebrities. A concept store, featuring refrigerated cabinets for the scents and visual displays of the perfumers, served as the initial marketing platform for these exceptional fragrances. Later, they were also made available in partnership with select department stores worldwide. This groundbreaking approach proved to be an overwhelming success, with the original nine perfumes attaining legendary status within the industry and the talented perfumers finally receiving the recognition they deserved.
Frederic Malle, self-identified as an “editor of perfumes,” continued to collaborate with other esteemed perfumers, whom he recognizes as “authors of perfumes,” to “publish” new Editions. With the same unrestrained creative freedom that characterized the first nine fragrances, Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle has expanded its offerings to include candles, innovative home scents, soap, and body care products. Today, Frederic Malle boasts an impressive collection of 47 perfumes in our fragrance base, spanning from the inaugural creation in 2000 to the most recent masterpiece in 2023. Perfumers such as Jean-Claude Ellena, Dominique Ropion, Maurice Roucel, Bruno Jovanovic, Carlos Benaim, Olivia Giacobetti, Pierre Bourdon, Edmond Roudnitska, Ralf Schwieger, Edouard Flechier, Michel Roudnitska, Sophia Grojsman, Fanny Bal, Anne Flipo, and Julien Rasquinet have all contributed their expertise and artistry to the Frederic Malle brand.
