Fendi, the renowned Italian fashion house, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1918 by Adele Casagrande. Originally established as a boutique in Rome specializing in leather and furs, the company underwent a name change and rebranding in 1925 when Adele married Edoardo Fendi. Thus, the iconic brand we know today as Fendi was born.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the boutique flourished, prompting the opening of additional stores beyond Rome. However, it was in 1946 that Adele and Edoardo’s daughters joined the family business, injecting fresh ideas and energy into the company. Around this time, the daughters encountered a promising young designer named Karl Lagerfeld in Paris. Recognizing his exceptional talent, they brought him on board, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Fendi.
Lagerfeld’s collaboration with Fendi commenced in 1965, culminating in the launch of the house’s first ready-to-wear fur collection in 1969. Characterized by modern silhouettes and groundbreaking techniques featuring fur and leather, this collection established Fendi’s reputation as an innovator in the industry. Lagerfeld also contributed to the company’s visual identity by designing the notable “Double F” logo, which remains an enduring symbol of Fendi to this day.
The legendary “baguette” style handbag is perhaps one of Fendi’s most iconic creations, attracting widespread recognition. Nevertheless, the brand’s offerings expanded beyond accessories into the realm of ready-to-wear fashion in 1977. Over subsequent decades, Fendi continued to diversify its portfolio, incorporating menswear, denim, gifts, eyeglasses, and fragrances. In fact, Fendi’s first fragrance, Fendi for Women, was launched in 1985, followed by Fendi Uomo in 1988. The brand has subsequently introduced a line of fragrances, including the latest addition, Fan di Fendi.
In collaboration with luxury-goods conglomerate LVMH, Fendi combines its expertise in fashion and fragrance to create unparalleled experiences for its discerning clientele. With a portfolio of 29 perfumes, spanning from the earliest edition in 1985 to the newest in 2018, Fendi has collaborated with esteemed perfumers such as Olivia Giacobetti, Jean Guichard, Christine Nagel, Francois Demachy, Jean-Pierre Béthouart, Thierry Wasser, Annick Menardo, Jacques Cavallier, Delphine Lebeau, and Benoist Lapouza.
Fendi stands as a testament to timeless luxury, innovative design, and unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. With a storied past and a future that continues to push boundaries, Fendi remains a prominent and revered name in the fashion and fragrance industries.
