Emilio Pucci, born in 1914 and passed away in 1992, was a renowned fashion designer and politician hailing from Florence, Italy.
Before delving into the world of fashion, Pucci showcased his versatility as a semi-professional athlete, pursuing various disciplines such as skiing, fencing, tennis, and swimming. Although he participated in the 1932 Winter Olympics as part of the Italian team, he did not compete in any specific event.
Pucci furthered his education in Milan, Italy, and the United States, where he obtained a degree in social sciences. In recognition of his academic achievements, the University of Florence awarded him a doctorate in political sciences.
Prior to embarking on his fashion journey, Pucci served in the Italian Air Force as a torpedo bomber, eventually attaining the rank of captain. It was during his military service that he showcased his early talent for design, creating sportswear garments for the skiing team at Reed College in Oregon, USA. Serendipitously, one of his female friends donned his creation, which was photographed whilst he was on leave in Switzerland. These photographs, captured by a Harper’s Bazaar photographer, garnered significant attention and admiration. As a result, Pucci was commissioned to design several garments for the magazine’s wintersports edition, attracting global appreciation. Instead of initiating mass production of his sportswear, he established his own prestigious haute couture house on the Isle of Capri.
Leveraging his extensive knowledge of stretchy materials, Pucci ventured into swimwear design, creating his inaugural swimwear collection. However, his affinity for vivid colors and distinctive patterns led him to expand his creations to include silk scarves, blouses, and dresses. These designs quickly gained popularity among the elite holidaying on the Isle of Capri, prompting Pucci to open a boutique in Rome, thus broadening his business prospects. By the late 1950s, his designs were embraced by the most acclaimed and beautiful actresses globally, prompting the addition of lingerie to his brand’s repertoire.
Renowned for their easily identifiable signature prints, known as “Pucci prints,” the Pucci label has successfully launched numerous collections for over half a century. Since 2000, the label has been part of the Louis Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy Group while retaining its iconic status as a fashion favorite with celebrities and fashionistas alike.
In 1965, Pucci released Vivara, the first fragrance under his eponymous label. An intense chypre for women, it was subsequently reintroduced in 2007 with a revised composition and bottle design while retaining its original name. Since 2007, several other fragrances have been launched. Designer Emilio Pucci boasts a fragrance base with 19 perfumes, ranging from the earliest edition created in 1965 to the newest in 2011. Collaborating with esteemed perfumers such as Christophe Raynaud, Louise Turner, Francois Demachy, Christine Nagel, Benoist Lapouza, Annick Menardo, Michel Girard, Michel Hy, Natalie Gracia-Cetto, and Marie-Aude Couture, Emilio Pucci fragrances continue to captivate discerning scent enthusiasts.
