Emmanuel Ungaro, a renowned French fashion designer, inherited his passion for tailoring from his father, a skilled tailor who sought refuge in France during the era of Fascist rule in Italy. Guided by his father’s influence, Ungaro received his first sewing machine as a gift, marking the beginning of his lifelong journey in the world of fashion. In pursuit of his dreams, the young Ungaro relocated to Paris in 1955 to work under the esteemed Cristobal Balenciaga. Following a brief tenure with Courrèges, he took the bold step of establishing his own eponymous fashion house in Paris in 1965.
Ungaro’s designs quickly gained traction, capturing the attention of fashion enthusiasts worldwide with their elegance, sensuality, and meticulous draping. Known for his masterful use of vibrant colors and bold patterns, his womenswear collection achieved remarkable success. In 1973, Ungaro expanded his offerings to include a menswear line, catering to a broader audience. Today, the Emmanuel Ungaro brand encompasses multiple labels such as Emmanuel Ungaro, Ungaro Fuchsia, and U by Ungaro, offering a diverse range of clothing options for women. Similarly, the brand has curated a distinctive identity in menswear through labels like Ungaro Homme, U by Ungaro, and Emmanuel/Emmanuel Ungaro.
The late 1990s and early 2000s marked an important chapter for Ungaro when Ferragamo acquired a significant stake in the company. This collaboration resulted in the establishment of Emmanuel Ungaro Parfums, acknowledging the significance of fragrances within the Ungaro brand. Notable fragrances in the perfume line-up include the iconic women’s scent Diva, introduced in 1983, as well as Senso, Ungaro, and Emmanuel Ungaro for Men. Through a partnership with Ferragamo and Bvlgari, the creation of Emmanuel Ungaro Parfums paved the way for the release of enchanting fragrances like Fleur de Diva, Desnuda, and the Apparition series for both men and women. Furthermore, the U by Ungaro line collaborates with Avon to offer a range of fragrances to their esteemed clientele.
Emmanuel Ungaro chose to retire from fashion in 2005, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to shape the industry. The company is presently owned by entrepreneur Asim Abdullah, with Giles Deacon serving as the current creative director. Within the fragrance realm, Ungaro boasts an impressive collection of 66 perfumes.
