Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is a highly influential figure in niche perfumery, known for her underground presence and groundbreaking creations. Under her brand, DSH Perfumes, she has pioneered the development of numerous concept perfumes and collaborated with renowned designers to produce exclusive fragrances. Initially a painter by profession, Dawn ventured into perfumery in 1991 while working at the prestigious ESSENSE Perfumery on Newbury Street in Boston.
Drawing from her background in fine art, Dawn has honed her talent for crafting perfumes based on artistic principles. Since the early 1990s, she has been working on her innovative line of artisan perfumes, which are readily available for consumers. In addition to her own label, Dawn has also introduced a collection of fragrances through a partnership with Japanese design partners, Undulate Labs, at the former Barneys New York/Tokyo.
Dawn has extended her expertise to niche markets, consulting for notable brands like Flora Napa Valley, Calypso, Jules & Jane, and Zents Spa Collection. Her remarkable contributions to the fragrance industry were acknowledged with an Art and Olfaction award in 2019 for her exceptional work on the fragrance Colorado, in collaboration with American Perfumer. Furthermore, Dawn had previously been a finalist for the same prestigious award in both 2015 and 2017.
Alongside her other endeavors, Dawn has also explored her creativity through the Limited Editions by Parfums des Beaux Arts, a concept line within DSH Perfumes. This particular line allows her to continuously challenge herself by designing and expanding her horizons, resulting in unique scents that reflect her personal favorites, paying homage to art, artists, literature, and the captivating world around us.
Dawn’s creations are available for purchase through various channels, including the official online store at dshperfumes.com, select retail outlets, and her Essense Studio located in Boulder, Colorado, where she is based. As a designer, DSH Perfumes boasts an impressive portfolio of 301 fragrances, with the brand being relatively new, having released its earliest edition in 2008 and its latest in 2022.
