Dana is a renowned perfume brand that originated in Spain in 1932. It was founded by Javier Serra, a former executive of the Spanish perfume house Myrurgia. Shortly after its establishment, the company relocated to Paris. Inspired by the Greek mythology character Danae, who was renowned for her beauty, the brand was aptly named Dana. The logo of the company, a stylish depiction of a woman’s head, was designed by the talented Spanish artist Mariano Andreu.
Dana made its debut in the fragrance market with the launch of its iconic women’s oriental perfume, Tabu, created by the celebrated perfumer Jean Carles. This fragrance quickly gained popularity and has remained a timeless classic, consistently ranking among the top-selling perfumes. Tabu continues to be produced to this day.
During the 1930s and 1950s, Dana introduced several notable fragrances that became legendary in the industry. Some of these timeless scents include Canoe and English Leather for men, and Ambush for women.
In 1940, Dana relocated its operations to the United States due to the occupation of France by Germany. Over time, the company transitioned from producing prestigious fragrances to catering to the mass market. Additionally, Dana acquired the licenses for several classic perfumes originally created by other fragrance houses, such as Chantilly (originally produced by Houbigant), Love’s Baby Soft, and the other fragrances from the Love’s series (originally produced by Mem), as well as Toujours Moi (originally by Corday, then Max Factor).
In 1994, Dana was bought by Renaissance Cosmetics. However, following their bankruptcy in 1999, the brand was acquired by New Dana Perfumes, later renamed Dana Classics. Under their stewardship, Dana Classics has continued to produce many of the original Dana fragrances. They have also reintroduced updated versions of beloved fragrances from the past, including Heaven Scent and Toujours Moi, appealing to the modern preferences of fragrance enthusiasts.
Dana’s fragrance collection comprises an impressive range of 51 perfumes. With the earliest edition created in 1932 and the newest from 2016, the brand has a rich history of offering exquisite scents to its discerning clientele. Perfumers such as Jean Carles, IFF, Loc Dong, Ron Winnegrad, Benoist Lapouza, Patty Hidalgo, Patricia Bilodeau, Olivia Jan, Mathieu Nardin, David Apel, and Nathalie Benareau have collaborated with Dana to craft these captivating fragrances.
