Crabtree & Evelyn is an esteemed cosmetics company that was established in 1970 by Cyrus Harvey, a visionary entrepreneur. Drawing inspiration from John Evelyn, a renowned English naturalist and conservationist of the 17th century, the company adopted its name. Evelyn’s extensive diary chronicling his adventures and daily life in England and abroad served as a fitting muse. The symbol adopted by Crabtree & Evelyn is the Crab Apple Tree (Pyrus malus), a native British tree considered to be the botanical ancestor of all cultivated apple varieties we know today.
Cyrus Harvey laid the foundation of the company in 1972 as a modest family enterprise in Cambridge, MA (USA), specializing in luxury soap offerings from around the globe. At that time, the concept of botanical beauty was still relatively novel, prompting the company to diversify its product range to include personal care items infused with the finest botanical essences and enchanting aromas. In 1977, Crabtree & Evelyn proudly inaugurated its first boutique in Philadelphia.
Crabtree & Evelyn is committed to enhancing everyday routines and transforming them into extraordinary and pleasurable experiences. Its extensive product catalog encompasses bath and body care alternatives for both men and women. Additionally, the company boasts an extravagant selection of perfumes, home fragrances, and kitchen and bath accessories. A noteworthy achievement worth mentioning is the commissioning of a unique rose, known as the Evelyn Rose. Expertly created over a span of eight years and after evaluating 30,000 seedlings, English rose specialist David Austin accomplished the perfect blend—a captivating apricot-hued rose characterized by its splendid blossoms and luscious fragrance. This divine Evelyn Rose ultimately became the centerpiece of Crabtree & Evelyn’s renowned “Evelyn Rose” fragrance and body care line, blended artfully with subtle green accords, peony, and a hint of peach. Many of the brand’s fragrances are inspired by classical floral notes such as Lavender, Rosewater, and Iris.
Furthermore, Crabtree & Evelyn excels in producing a spa line hailed as La Source and a range of hand care products specifically designed to cleanse and protect the hands of avid gardeners—the Gardners line. A collaboration with esteemed British men’s shaving accessories company, Edwin Jagger, has resulted in a comprehensive line of men’s shaving products. In 2007, the brand embarked on a special collection in partnership with designer and model India Hicks, culminating in a captivating array of women’s body care and home fragrance products.
In 1996, KLK acquired Crabtree & Evelyn, leaving a lasting impression on the company’s journey. Today, Crabtree & Evelyn boutiques can be found in 40 countries across the globe, offering its discerning customers a remarkable shopping experience. With 45 perfumes in its fragrant repertoire, Crabtree & Evelyn continues to captivate the senses. Donna Ramanauskas, a talented perfumer, has lent her expertise to the creation of these remarkable fragrances, with the earliest edition dating back to 1970 and the most recent launch being in 2015.
