André Courrèges, a renowned French fashion designer, is synonymous with his avant-garde and forward-thinking creations. Initially trained in civil engineering, Courrèges relocated to Paris to begin his career at the esteemed Geanne Lafaurie fashion design house. Following this, he collaborated with the Spanish designer Balenciaga for an impressive decade-long period.
In 1961, Courrèges took a significant leap and established his own fashion house, Maison de Couture. It was within the walls of this establishment that he embarked on a new creative path, shaping his distinct style. His most iconic contributions to the fashion world include the miniskirt, the little white dress, and the trouser suit.
However, his breakthrough moment arrived in 1964 with the introduction of his groundbreaking ‘Space Age’ collection. True to its name, the collection featured geometric shapes such as squares, trapezoids, and triangles. Complemented by boots, goggles, and hems sitting three inches above the knee, Courrèges’ unconventional and minimalist aesthetic was met with resounding success within the industry.
Equally distinctive were the materials Courrèges utilized in his designs, such as plastic, PVC, and metal. These unconventional choices harmoniously blended with the primary colors prominent in his collections: metallics, white, red, and yellow. While the modernity of his creations thrilled a younger audience, the designer’s core clientele remained mature and sophisticated women.
Alongside these notable achievements, Courrèges also excelled in crafting other remarkable designs, including sweater pants, parkas, tennis dresses, beach attire, and mechanic-style coveralls. A particular standout was his line of swimsuits, characterized by delicate string fastenings. His vibrant acid colors and distinctive geometrical patterns became his trademarks, often imitated and adopted by high-street retailers.
Courrèges frequently credited modern architecture, technology, innovative fabrics, and the artistic movements of modernism and futurism as his main sources of inspiration. These influences challenged him to conceptualize and produce truly unforgettable designs.
Today, the House of Courrèges extends beyond clothing, offering a diverse range of accessories, luggage, and perfumes. The designer boasts an impressive collection of 38 fragrances, starting from the inaugural edition in 1970 and culminating in the most recent release in 2023. Courrèges fragrances have been created in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Julie Masse, Gerard Anthony, Edouard Flechier, Robert Gonnon, Alberto Morillas, Jean Jacques, Antoine Lie, Nicolas Beaulieu, Fabrice Pellegrin, Francis Camail, Raphael Haury, Annick Menardo, Mylène Alran, Benoist Lapouza, and Fanny Bal.
